Shanna Phillips, a 14-year-old ninth-grader at East Rowan High School, got a button buck the morning of Dec. 6, then added a spike that afternoon.
She was hunting with her father, Jack, on the family’s farm in eastern Rowan. Her brother, Thomas, got two deer earlier in the season.
Jack Phillips said they have the meat cut into chunks and then can it. They make jerky, burgers and sausage, and they have a full freezer of meat after the success of the two youngsters.
“I’ve had the most fun ever and not killed a deer myself,” Jack Phillips said.

Glenn “Big T” Tyson of China Grove was among a group of fishing buddies who caught and released citation drum during a recent fishing trip to the coast.
Tyson said the group had gone fishing for more than 40 years, but missed about eight years because of health problems until this time.
Others along for the excursion were Jimmy “Hoss” Tyson, Vernon “Doc” Bernhardt, Buggs Lipe and Capt. Greg Voliva of Four Seasons Guide Service out of Oriental.
“It was a good trip for all,” Tyson noted.
