Master Gardener Volunteers took time to put down their trowels and gather this week for their annual Christmas social.
The social was a time to relax and recognize those who have contributed much to the organization and the community. The association comprises Master Gardener Volunteers who have completed the initial course and continue to contribute by volunteering with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Horticulture program.
A major highlight of this year’s social was Carole Massey’s recognition for 10 years service and her retirement as the Rowan County Master Gardener coordinator. Her work as coordinator has often been an overtime job for Massey. Her contributions to Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener Program are quite evident and extensive, too many to list.
But one must mention Massey’s strengths and ability to organize both adult and youth educational programs that have made the Rowan County Master Gardener Program one of the best in North Carolina. Not only an avid gardener, she also donates time to 4-H youth programs and other community youth programs.
The part-time position was funded solely by the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation. Rowan County was extremely fortunate to receive this funding and reap its benefits.
Carolyn Alexander, outgoing president of the Rowan County Master Gardener Volunteer Association, was also recognized for her strong leadership.
In every volunteer organization there are those who are willing to donate extra time and effort for both the organization and the community. Master Gardener volunteers who fall into these criteria are called “Silver Cans.” Recipients of the 2008 Silver Can Award are Eric Lentz and Dawn Holshouser. Master Gardeners Sue Davis, Jim Stricker and Sally Bradley were also recognized for their contributions to educational projects.
Incoming President Bob Bruce takes over the reins as president of this busy organization. Other incoming officers of the Rowan County Master Gardener Association for 2009 are: Davis, vice president; Martha Mincey, secretary; and Holshouser, treasurer.
