LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. ó Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points, and unranked Maryland hustled its way to an 80-62 upset of No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday at the Old Spice Classic.
After falling behind by three early in the first half, the Terrapins (4-0) countered with a 23-5 run to take the lead for good. Maryland held Spartans star Raymar Morgan to four points and shot 9-for-19 on 3-pointers to 2-of-9 for Michigan State.
The Terrapins also were much better at the free throw line, going 17-of-21 while Michigan State was 12-of-27. Travis Walton led the Spartans (2-1) with 16 points.
Tonight, Maryland will play No. 9 Gonzaga.
No. 9 Gonzaga 83, Oklahoma State 71
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. ó Micah Downs scored 17 points and Jeremy Pargo added 15 to lead No. 9 Gonzaga past Oklahoma State 83-71 on Thursday night in the opening round of the Old Spice Classic.
Gonzaga (3-0) broke open a close game down the stretch after trailing by one with 7 minutes left.
Pargo scored on a spin move in the lane to complete a 9-0 run that put Gonzaga ahead 71-63 with 4:21 remaining.
Terrel Harris scored 17 points for Oklahoma State (4-1).
No. 12 Tennessee 78, Siena 64
LAKE BUENA VISTA. Fla. ó Wayne Chism scored 15 points, leading Tennessee over Siena in the first round of the Old Spice Classic.
Renaldo Woolridge and Tyler Smith each added 14 points for the Volunteers (4-0). Alex Franklin led Siena (2-1) with 17.
The Vols went on an 18-0 run late in the first half and pulled away to a 47-27 halftime lead.
No. 21 Georgetown 58, Wichita State 50
LAKE BUENTA VISTA, Fla. ó Austin Freeman scored 18 points and DaJuan Summers added 14 to lead Georgetown over Wichita State in a first-round game at the Old Spice Classic.
Greg Monroe added 11 points for the Hoyas (3-0). Georgetown preserved the victory by making all eight free throws during the last minute of the game.
OTHERS
ANAHEIM, Calif. ó Jeff Pendergraph had 23 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 14 Arizona State beat Charlotte 84-56 Thursday night in the first round of the 76 Classic.
Charlotte guard RaShad Coleman came off the bench and scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half, including the final nine before the break for the 49ers (1-4).
UTEP 75, St. Mary’s 62
ANAHEIM, Calif. ó Randy Culpepper had 20 points before fouling out and UTEP handed St. Mary’s its first loss of the season Thursday with a 75-62 victory in the first round of the 76 Classic.
Center Omar Samhan led St. Mary’s (3-1) with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
