Catawba’s volleyball team knocked off top-seeded Wingate 17-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-19 in the Southeast Regional tournament on Saturday.
The win was the first for Catawba against Wingate in the last 10 meetings and also snapped a 29-match winning streak by the Bulldogs (31-2).
Fourth-seeded Catawba (22-10) plays Armstrong Atlantic for the regional championship tonight at 7 p.m. at Wingate’s Cuddy Arena.
Second-seeded Armstrong Atlantic topped Lincoln Memorial 3-2 in the other semifinal.
Catawba senior outside hitter Melissa Griffith led the way for the second-straight match, posting 24 kills.
Senior outside hitter Melissa Powers added 14 kills and four block assists, while freshman outside hitter Shay Meeks contributed 13 kills.
Freshman setter Megan Courson handed out 48 assists to go along with 12 digs and junior libero Mai Zoua Lo collected 22 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Billo led the Wingate attack with 17 kills.
Catawba took the second set on a combo block by Griffith and Chunn.
A kill by Griffith broke a 22-all tie in the third set, and Catawba won it on two errors by the Bulldogs.
Catawba controlled the fourth set, and Powers finished it with a kill.
n Men’s college basketball
Dominick Reid scored 21 points to lead Catawba to a 101-091 victory against Queens at “The Oven” on Saturday.
Catawba, which led 48-43 at halftime, put six in double figures.
Queens tied the game at 76-all on a three-pointer by Reggie Hopkins and grabbed a 78-76 lead on a pair of free throws by J.B. Baldwin. It was the first lead for the hosts since they held a 22-21 edge midway through the opening half.
Baldwin tied the game at 86-all on a free throw before Reid put the Indians up for good with a pair from the stripe with 4:24 remaining.
Catawba then stretch its lead with accurate foul shooting and made seven free throws in the final minute
Reid shot 8-for-15. Antonio Houston with 18 points and added nine rebounds. Fields came off the bench to score 17.
Hopkins scored 20 points for the Royals (0-3).
n Catawba’s Houston was recently named SAC Player of the Week. He averaged 21 points, 5.5 boards and 4.5 assists in Catawba’s first two games.
n Jon Hathcock (NW Cabarrus) hit a 3-pointer for Lenoir-Rhyne in an 80-74 loss to Barton on Saturday.
n Carson-Newman fell to Alabama-Huntsville 98-94 on Saturday.
n Women’s hoops
Brittany Higgins scored 25 points and led Catawba’s women’s basketball team to a fast-paced 95-81 victory against Pfeiffer on Saturday.
Nisha Long and Maggie Sullivan scored 18 points each for the Indians (3-1). Pam Muldrow had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Cameron Clark had 11 points and eight steals.
Catawba coach Angie Morton got a victory over the school she coached for many years.
Shanee Purnell scored 25 points for Pfeiffer (0-3).
Nicole Maready (Davie) had 17 points for the Falcons.
n Meredith’s Brittany Cornelius (East Rowan) scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds in a 61-32 loss to Roanoke on Friday.
n Guilford’s Tracey Croner (East) had eight points and eight rebounds in a 71-68 loss to Purchase on Friday.
n Guilford beat Meredith 73-50 on Saturday. Croner scored 12 points for the Quakers while Cornelius had 12 rebounds for the Avenging Angels.
Cornelius represented Meredith on the all-tournament team.
n N.C. State’s Shayla Fields (Salisbury) scored 18 points before fouling out in a 65-61 loss against Yale on Saturday.
n Reneé Roberson (West Rowan) scored eight points for Lees-McRae in a 100-57 loss to Tusculum on Saturday.
n Prep basketball
The Salisbury girls basketball team will play South Mecklenburg at 4 p.m. on Monday in the Davie Shootout in Mocksville.
Salisbury’s boys will play Forbush at 5:30 p.m. in a first-round game.
Davie concludes Monday’s activities with a girls-boys doubleheader with Asheboro. The girls game is scheduled for 7 p.m., with the boys game at approximately 8:30.
South Meck’s boys will report for the second day of the tournament on Tuesday to take on the Asheboro-Davie loser.
Salisbury’s boys will play in the championship game against the Asheboro-Davie winner in Tuesday’s championship game regardless of how they fare against Forbush.
The unusual format was caused by scheduling issues.
n Carson’s girls opened with a 65-24 home loss against Robinson on Friday.
Meagan Livengood scored six points for the Cougars. Breckin Settlemyer had five.
Kelsee Cheek scored 16 points for the Bulldogs.
n Jasmine Charles had 20 points and 11 rebounds, but Central Davidson’s girls were swamped by River Mill 93-47 on Friday.
n Lynnsey Howard scored 15 points to lead Lake Norman’s girls to a 67-15 romp over South Iredell on Friday.
n College football
Tusculum fell to Delta State 27-19 in the Division II playoffs on Saturday.
Corey Russell threw for 310 yards for the Pioneers.
Delta State will play North Alabama, a 37-10 winner over Valdosta State, for the regional championship.
n Billy Riddle (Davie) forced a fumble, Anthony “Whopper” Williams (NW Cabarrus) made a sack, and Gordy Witte (Salisbury) had a tackle for Appalachian State in Saturday’s victory over Western Carolina.
n Tristan Dorty (West Rowan) made a tackle for Wake Forest in a 24-21 loss against Boston College on Saturday.
n Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys Blue basketball team lost to First Assembly 31-24. Joseph Rusher scored 13 points for the Jaguars (0-2).
n Varsity boys Red nipped First Assembly 33-32. Tyler Petty led the Jaguars with 19 points. Trey Bergsma scored eight.
n Robbie Slate and Sam McNeely played well for the SA jayvee boys in the 25-17 victory over Sacred Heart.
n Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls were led by Isabella Rusher and Alex Warren in a 21-14 loss to Sacred Heart.
n DCDS hoops
Davidson Country Day’s boys basketabll team topped Statesville Christian 45-16.
Alex Franklin led the Diamondbacks with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Tim Burges had 10 points, and Conor Honeycutt made five steals.
DCDS won the jayvee girls game 30-12 behind the play of Jo Jo Chaves and Emerson Hayes.
n West baseball camp
West Rowan baseball coach David Wright will conduct his Thanksgiving Baseball Camp on Friday, Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The camp is a hitters camp and will include swing concepts, drills, demonstrations, cage time, field instruction and bunting.
Guests will include fifth-round draft pick Greg Miclat (Orioles) and Belmont standout Daniel Wagner (South Rowan).
Wright will conduct a pitchers camp December 13 and a middle school team camp in February.
