Area briefs: Catawba falls in OT

A jumper by Barton’s Janetta Robinson with 3.2 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, and the visiting Bulldogs outlasted Catawba 90-87 at Goodman Gym on Thursday.
Regulation ended in a 78-78 tie.
Barton never trailed in the extra period, taking the lead for good on a layup by Anita Fenner with 3:07 remaining.
Brittany Higgins pulled Catawba (2-1) within 85-84 with 1:07 left, but Esty Flores hit two free throws and Fenner added another after a missed 3-pointer for an 88-84 lead with 23 seconds to play.
Cameron Clark’s 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 88-87, but Flores iced the game with a pair of free throws with 0.6 on the clock.
Barton got two 3-pointers in the final 70 seconds to take a 44-41 halftime lead. Catawba led 58-50 early in the second half.
Flores scored 35 points to lead Barton (1-1). She scored 21 in the first half.
Higgins led Catawba with 23 points, while Kisha Long tallied a career-high 19 points. Maggie Sullivanposted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Pamela Muldrow had 11 rebounds and five steals.
Catawba shot 58 percent in the first half, but cooled to 40 percent in the second half and was 3-for-10 in overtime.
“It was a tough loss,” Catawba coach Angie Morton said. “We made mistakes at times and missed key free throws. It was hard to lose after scoring 87 points.”
Catawba plays at Pfeiffer Saturday.

– Blue Bears split
Livingstone split a CIAA doubleheader with Elizabeth City State at New Trent Gym on Thursday.
Brittany Wright had 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead Livingstone’s women to a 67-62 victory.
Cassaundra Rhodes and Asheka Hudson had 13 points apiece for the Blue Bears (2-1, 1-1).
* Livingstone’s men couldn’t stop Elizabeth City State star Anthony Hilliard and fell 65-54.
Hilliard had 25 points and 13 rebounds.
Keith Darden scored 10 points for Livingstone. Santonio Springs had nine points and 10 boards. Tayloe Taylor had eight assists.
– Elks Hoop Shoot
Elks Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest local qualifying will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at Hall Gym from 1-3 p.m.
This competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8-13. April 1, 2009, is the age cutoff date.
Local qualifiers advance to competition on Dec. 13.
– Prep basketball
Davie County’s boys lost their opener to West Iredell 53-44 on Thursday.
Davie trailed 44-41 late, but the Warriors sealed the game at the foul line.
Drew Absher had 15 points and six assists for the War Eagles. James Mayfield had 10 points.
Quan Rucker scored 12 points for West Iredell, including the 1,000th point of his career on a drive.
P.J. Clyburn topped the Warriors with 13 points.
* Paul Larsen scored 23 points for Lake Norman in a 98-65 victory against Forestview.
* Mooresville’s boys lost 55-52 to East Gaston in their opener. Isiah Johnson scored 19 for the Blue Devils.
* Statesville’s standout guard Keyrra Gillespie officially signed with Clemson’s women’s program.
* Providence Grove’s boys lost to Southwestern Randolph 73-56 on Thursday. Zach Milliner scored 22 points for the Patriots.
* Providence Grove’s girls lost to Southwestern Randolph 74-58. Kristie Langley scored 22 for the Patriots.
– Prep volleyball
The Statesville Record and Landmark reported North Iredell’s Molly Rhyne signed with Gardner-Webb and Taylor Clendinin signed with Lees-McRae.
– 8th-grade hoops
North Rowan Middle’s girls beat Erwin 29-20 in a league opener.
Taylor Sells led North’s scoring with seven points, while Nikhyia Polk and Amber Carter had six apiece.
Erwin (1-1, 0-1) was paced by Casey Gullett’s six points and Bobbi Thomas’ 14 rebounds.
* North’s boys rolled over Erwin 46-17. T.J. Bates scored 16 points for the Mavericks. Desmond Jackson scored 10, and Lekevian Allen added eight.
Erwin (0-2, 0-1) was led by Dalton Moose with seven points and four boards. Dalton Bost scored six points.
– Intimidators fireworks
The Kannapolis Intimidators will have fireworks following every Friday and Saturday home game in 2009.
There will be 23 fireworks displays, including Independence Day.
“In celebration of our 15th anniversary in Kannapolis, we have decided to salute the area with 23 firework extravaganzas,” Intimidators GM Randy Long said.
