CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ó Sylven Landesberg scored 28 points to break Virginia’s freshman-debut scoring record and Jeff Jones hit two late 3-pointers to lift the Cavaliers in a 107-97 victory against Virginia Military Institute.
Landesberg eclipsed Jeff Lamp’s record of 24 points in a freshman debut, set 31 years ago, and had 8 assists and 8 rebounds for the Cavaliers in their season opener.
Clemson 76, Temple 72
CHARLESTON, S.C. ó Propelled by another strong defensive effort, Clemson held on to beat Temple 76-72 Sunday and win the Charleston Classic.
Clemson (3-0) led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but the Owls rallied to cut the lead to two with 38 seconds to play.
No. 6 Michigan State 100, Idaho 62
EAST LANSING, Mich. ó Chris Allen scored a career-high 21, leading Michigan State over Idaho.
Michigan State’s Raymar Morgan also scored 21 points, Kalin Lucas had 13 points and nine assists and Goran Suton added 10 points.
Mac Hopson had 13 points and Brandon Wiley scored 10 for the Vandals (1-1).
No. 9 Notre Dame 94, S.C. Upstate 58
SOUTH BEND, Ind ó Luke Harangody had 30 points and 14 rebounds to lead Notre Dame over South Carolina-Upstate.
Luke Zeller added a career-high 18 points and Zach Hillesland had 13 points for the Irish (1-0). Bobby Davis led the Spartans (0-2) with 14 points and Nick Schneiders added 12.
No. 19 Florida 81, Bradley 58
GAINESVILLE, Fla.ó Forward Dan Werner and guard Walter Hodge each scored 17 points to lead Florida over Bradley.
Werner made 4 of 6 3-pointers and Hodge made 5 of 9. The Gators (2-0) were 14-for-32 from the 3-point line.
Guards Nick Calathes added 13 points and seven rebounds and Erving Walker added 10 points for the Gators.
Guard Dodie Dunson led Bradley (1-1) with 15 points. Guard Chris Roberts added 13 points.
No. 25 Wisconsin 68, Long Beach St. 61
MADISON, Wis. ó Marcus Landry scored 23 points and Wisconsin held on for a victory over Long Beach State.
ODU 69, Charlotte 68
CHARLOTTE ó Jonathan Adams hit a 3-pointer with 5.5 seconds to give Old Dominion a 69-68 victory against Charlotte on Sunday night in the Monarchs’ season opener.
Charlie Coley scored 14 and Lamont Mack 13 for Charlotte, which closed an eight-point halftime deficit in part by hitting 16 of 17 foul shots. Ian Andersen chipped in 10 for the 49ers, and reserve center Phil Jones tied a Halton Arena record with six blocked shots.
