CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina coach Butch Davis says the Tar Heels will open the competition for starting quarterback this week.

The No. 25 Tar Heels have played with one-time third-stringer Cameron Sexton most of the way since starter T.J. Yates went down with a broken ankle in September. But Davis said Monday the Tar Heels will let Yates and Sexton go through practice this week before deciding who will start Saturday against North Carolina State.

Sexton led the Tar Heels to a comeback win at Miami and had won four of six starts, but the Tar Heels struggled to sustain scoring drives in a weekend loss at Maryland. Before that game, the Tar Heels controlled their own destiny in the race to win the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division.
