The natural light photography of Bruce Roberts is known to readers of Southern Living and Our State magazines. His new book, “Just Yesterday: North Carolina People and Places,” has been published by the Historical Publications Section of the Office of Archives and History. The publication comes in conjunction with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources’ 2008 theme, “Telling Our Stories.”
The book’s 191 black-and-white and color photographs may strike a chord in all who consider North Carolina home.
Roberts’ perspective records images of lighthouses and coastal scenes, workers toiling on family farms in the eastern Sandhills, the Civil Rights movement, urban growth in the Piedmont, the natural beauty of the western mountains and the dignity of that region’s people. Commentaries by Roberts accompany the photos.
Roberts was a journalist at several North Carolina newspapers before joining the Charlotte Observer as a staff photographer in 1959. From 1963 to1978, he worked as a freelance photographer, his work appearing in a number of books and national magazines.
In 1978, he joined the staff of Southern Living as the magazine’s first director of photography and later served as its senior travel photographer.
“Just Yesterday: North Carolina People and Places” is 150 pages, illustrated, with an index, and paperbound, and costs $34.69, which includes tax and shipping.
