Area briefs: Catawba wins exhibition

Catawba’s men’s basketball team opened its season with an 89-78 exhibition win against Athletes In Action at Goodman Gym on Thursday.
Catawba led 42-37 at halftime, but AIA had a 10-point run early in the second half to take a 47-44 lead.
Trey Shoemaker tied the game for Catawba with a 3-pointer, and back-to-back baskets by Rob Fields gave the Indians a 56-49 lead. It was 56-all when a bucket by Cliff Burns (Davie County) gave the Indians the lead for good with 14:22 left.
Fields led Catawba with 22 points and shot 10-for-15 from the field. Antonio Houston scored 20 points. He was 9-for-10 from the foul line. Burns added 15 points, while Isaac Rose and Donald Rutherford contributed 12 apiece.

– Varsity football
Davie County defensive back Perry James, West Iredell defensive back Quan Rucker and Mount Tabor running back Hunter Furr were the area players named to North Carolina’s Shrine Bowl team.
– Jayvee football
Salisbury picked up two wins on Thursday to finish a perfect CCC season.
The Hornets beat North Rowan 35-0 on the field and collected a forfeit from Providence Grove, which has folded its jayvee season.
Riley Gallagher’s 56-yard pass to Daquan Robertson started Salisbury’s onslaught against the Cavs.
Salisbury (8-2, 7-0) got a 14-yard scoring run from Deshaun Lyles, an 18-yard scoring burst from Dominique Dismuke, a 3-yard TD run from Dejoun Jones and a 6-yard scoring run from James Means.
David Simons kicked five PATs.
Kavari Hillie, Tre Jackson and Jericho White led the defense.
* Defensive back Tevin Jones and linebacker Keenan Williamson returned interceptions for touchdowns to lead A.L. Brown to a 19-7 victory at Porter Ridge.
The Wonders (9-0) were held to 111 rushing yards, including a TD run by Demetrius Jackson.
– Carcella gets ace
Rich Carcella made a hole-in-one at Foxwood Golf Club earlier this month. He used a 5-iron on the 166-yard No. 9 hole.
Janice Hackler, Don Hodge and Brent Hudson witnessed the feat.
– Middle school football
Erwin’s eighth-graders upset Southeast 14-8 in middle school football.
Justin Kerr scored on a 35-yard run, Dalton Moose had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Tyler L’Hommedieu caught a conversion pass from Austin Bell.
Dalton Bost also had an outstanding offensive game for the Eagles (1-6) while L’Hommedieu, John Novak, Drew Miller, Justin Burroughs, Madison Hedrick and Mack Washington were among the defensive standouts.
Southeast fell to 5-2.
– Salisbury Academy
Salisbury Academy’s soccer team finished its season with a 2-0 victory over Hickory Christian in the final of the CCISAA consolation bracket.
Justin Ruffin and Philip Simons scored goals for the Jaguars (7-3-1), and Tyler Petty had the shutout in goal. He made the all-tournament team.
– DCCC celebrates
Davidson County Community College will celebrate the 2007-2008 men’s basketball team’s co-championship with the unveiling of a banner Saturday afternoon prior to this season’s 3 p.m. opener.
The Storm had a 22-7 record. W.J. Parks (South Rowan) and Kurt Misenheimer (East Rowan) were team members.

Catawba’s volleyball team is ranked second in the Southeast Region. Catawba’s women’s soccer team is ranked seventh.

Pfeiffer’s Brittany Beltran was named Carolina Conference Golfer of the Month for October.
* Pfeiffer’s women’s soccer team beat Barton 4-1 on Thursday.
– West boosters
The West Rowan High Athletic Booster Club meets Nov. 3 at 6 :30 p.m. in the school media center.
Everyone is invited to attend. The club is kicking off its annual Christmas BBQ sale.
