ANAHEIM, Calif. ó Michael Leighton made 32 saves and Ryan Bayda, Rod Brind’Amour and Eric Staal scored goals in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 3-1 victory over the slumping Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night.
Brind’Amour broke a 1-1 tie late in the second period and the Hurricanes held off Anaheim in the final period for their first victory on a six-game trip that began with a 4-3 overtime loss at Los Angeles on Friday night.
The victory moved Carolina coach Peter Laviolette past the late Bob Johnson into second place among U.S.-born coaches with 235 career victories. Former Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella tops the list with 239.
Francois Beauchemin scored for the Ducks, who fell to 1-5 a night after beating San Jose 4-0.
Niclas Walin had two assists for Carolina. Ray Whitney set up Brind’Amour’s goal to extend his season-opening points streak to five games. Whitney has a goal and five assists.
Blackhawks 4, Canucks 2
CHICAGO ó Patrick Sharp had two goals and an assist and the Chicago Blackhawks won for the first time under new coach Joel Quenneville, beating the Vancouver Canucks 4-2.
Patrick Kane added a goal and two assists, Brent Seabrook also scored and Cristobal Huet made 28 saves for his first victory with Chicago.
Pavol Demitra and Henrik Sedin scored for the Canucks and Roberto Luongo made 22 saves.
