Area briefs: West pair advances

The West Rowan tennis doubles team of Kate Ritchie and Sarah Teel qualified for the Western Regional with three wins in the NPC tournament.
Ritchie-Teel defeated South Rowan’s Marissa Holman and Alex Caldwell 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
The West duo also prevailed in a tight match over the NW Cabarrus team of Haley Catchpole-Rheanna McKnight 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Teel and Ritchie will play again on Oct. 17 in the regional at Asheville’s T.C. Roberson High.
– Prep cross country
South Rowan’s boys finished second among 33 teams in the United Way Invitational at Newton’s Southside Park.
T.C. Roberson won with 80 points, and South was next with 121. Lake Norman took third with 124. East Rowan, led by Ross Oden’s fourth-place showing, was fourth with 130 points.
Northwest Cabarrus’ Chase Fisher won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 12 seconds and was followed by A.L. Brown’s Larry Scaggs (16:32), West Caldwell’s Cesar Reyes 16:38) and Oden (16:39).
Michael York (eighth, 16:52), Tyler Kowalczyk (14th, 17:17), Dalton Johnson (15th, 17:20), Jeff Culbertson (46th, 17:54), Nathaniel Winslow (49th, 18:03) Caleb O’Neal (55th, 18:11) and Eric Delgado (70th, 18:29) ran for South.
Oden, Cole Honeycutt (10th, 16:57), Eli Walton (16th, 17:24), Brad Oden (34th, 17:40), J. Michael Shuping (76th, 18:33), Coleton Boone (84th, 18:49) and Hunter Arey (89th, 18:53) competed for East.
Carson placed 13th with help from Ethan Horne (24th, 17:35), Nick Golden (59th, 18:15), Matt Hefelfinger (91st, 18:54), Wesley Carlton (130th, 19:37), Anson Phillips (135th, 19:43), Jared Brooks (157th, 20:08) and Nathan Cloutier (170th, 20:24)
West Rowan, which placed 16th, received contributions from Dillon Kluttz (21st, 17:30), Chris Holmes (64th, 18:21), Noah King (111th, 19:12), Austin Wood (134th, 19:42), Michael Melton (138th, 19:47), Sam Daniel (164th, 20:20) and Ricky Meek (169th, 20:24).
* T.C. Roberson also won the girls event, and South Rowan finished 10th among 26 teams. Carson was 12th, East took 15th and Leslie Pence (16th, 20:03) led West to 18th place. Jenny Gallagher of second-place Lake Norman set a course record with a 18:27.
South’s scorers were Emily Kinney (26th, 20:37), Camille Craddock (54th, 21:48), Brenna Pruitt (70th, 22:28), Ericka Ashley (75th, 22:35) and Hannah Houston (165th, 26:43).
Carson’s scorers were Sierra Zemanick (38th, 20:58), Alex Hunter (55th, 21:59), Jordan Murdock (67th, 22:22), Sarah Hayden (127th, 24:23) and Sydney Houghton (132nd, 24:36).
The top five for East featured Taylor Arey (42nd, 21:32), Jenny Hughes (62nd, 22:10), Jenna Cauble (104th, 23:36) and Megan Linke (106th, 23:39).
West got points from Pence, Taylor Bryan (45th, 21:36), Leighana Watson (122nd, 24:14), Bridget Etheridge (150th, 25:28) and Claire Kistler (181st, 27:45).
– Prep golf
Salisbury shot 125 to win a girls golf match at Salem Glen on Thursday and improved to 18-2. Reagan shot 133 and North Davidson 152.
Allison Lee and Catherine Parks shot 41s for the Hornets. Madison Kennedy shot 43 and Lily Yatawara 46.
Reagan’s Meredith Mock was medalist with a 39.
The Rowan County Championship will be held Oct. 15 at McCanless.
– NPC volleyball
Carson (6-10 NPC) swept Northwest Cabarrus Thursday to stay in the hunt for the NPC’s sixth and final playoff berth.
Carson has a match at Statesville (5-11) on Monday that should decide sixth.
Statesville lost to West Iredell 3-1 Thursday. The Greyhounds beat the Cougars in their first meeting.
n South Rowan (12-4 NPC) swept Mooresville for its eighth straight victory and stayed tied for second place.
– Jayvee football
Salisbury’s jayvees stayed unbeaten in the CCC with a 21-7 victory over West Davidson at Ludwig Stadium on Thursday.
The Hornets (4-2, 3-0) overcame a 7-6 fourth-quarter deficit.
Dejoun Jones scored on a 18-yard run for the Hornets, Riley Gallagher tallied on a 22-yard option run and Deshaun Lyles had an 8-yard TD run.
Jones caught a tipped pass from Gallagher for two extra points, and David Simons kicked one PAT.
* West Rowan’s jayvees defeated Carson 28-13 to improve to 4-2.
– Middle school football
China Grove’s eighth-graders defeated Knox 26-0.
Scoring touchdowns for the Red Devils were Eric Tyler on a 1-yard run, Josh Medlin on a 7-yard pass from Tyler, Curtis Martin on a 2-yard run, and Bubba McLaughlin on a 2-yard run.
Connor Bridges had a two-point conversion.
Defensive standouts for the Devils were Tyler, Medlin, Bridges, McLaughlin, Clint Meece, Devin Mason, David Anderson and Jacob Morrison.
* West Rowan Middle’s eighth-graders rolled over Erwin 42-0.
Cody Eggers rushed for touchdowns of 35 and 5 yards for the Bulldogs (3-1).
Brandon Ijames scored on a 25-yard run, C.J. Ellis had a 22-yard scoring run, Jamey Spurlin had a 12-yard TD run, and Cody McNeely scored from 10 yards out.
Terrance Polk and Demetrius Davidson added two-point conversions.
Matthew Choi, Rashard Sherrill, Logan Stoodley, Jaylon Johnson, Travis Reddick, Brandon Hansen and Shaquille Ijames led the defense, which had four fumble recoveries.
– Country Club golf
The Country Club of Salisbury held its Women’s Club Championship Oct. 7-8.
The field was divided into flights by the first day’s results.
Winning the Championship flight was Patti Glassgow. The Champion in the First Flight was Kathy Carlton.
– Youth wrestling
The Rowan County Youth Wrestling League will register boys in Grades K-6 on Nov. 1 during YFL Games at North Rowan High and on Nov. 3-6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hall Gym. Registration fee is $65.
