East Rowan’s girls tennis team moved into a tie for first place in the NPC by posting a 6-3 win against Mooresville on Thursday.
East (4-0 NPC) pulled even with Lake Norman in the league standings. The two teams were supposed to meet earlier this week, but Tuesday’s match was postponed because of rain.
East’s Hannah Kovach, Brittany Honeycutt, Emily Beck, Caitlyn Fry and Devan Corpening won singles matches against Mooresville, which entered the day in third place. Kovach-Emilee Smith won at No. 1 doubles.
The Blue Devils (3-2 NPC) have dropped consecutive matches to East and Lake Norman.
n Salisbury won 9-0 against West Davidson on Thursday.
Brooke Johnson, Erika Nelson, Sierra Davis, Mary Margaret Mills, Dzenita Sukurica and Sarah Shirley were victorious in singles for the Hornets (12-1, 9-0 CCC).
Hannah Lebowitz-Kirstin Meyerhoeffer, Shea Comadoll-Joy Loeblein and Johnson-Nelson won in doubles.
* West Rowan lost 8-1 to Davie County on Thursday. The top-seeded doubles team of Sarah Teel-Madison Rusher won for West.
– Prep golf
Salisbury’s golf team shot 127 and finished second to defending 4A champion Northwest Guilford in a match played at Starmount Forest in Greensboro on Wednesday.
Northwest Guilford shot 122. Grimsley shot 128.
Allison Lee shot 40 for nine holes to lead the Hornets. Catherine Parks (43), Amber Lyerly (44), Madison Kennedy (45) and Lily Yatawara (46) also competed for Salisbury.
Northwest’s Brianna Clemmons shot 35.
– Jayvee football
Kaleel Hollis returned the second-half kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown to spark A.L. Brown to a 28-6 victory over Anson at Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
Quin Gill scored on a 4-yard run, Travis Riley plunged over for a TD from the 1, and Demetrius Jackson caught a scoring pass from Michael Church.
Brown (4-0) rushed for 190 yards.
* West Rowan outscored Northwest Cabarrus 42-36 in a four-overtime thriller. Details will likely be available for Saturday’s edition.
– Catawba athletics
Catawba’s volleyball team swept Limestone 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 on Wednesday.
Catawba (5-4) was led by Melissa Powers, who posted 15 kills, three blocks and a pair of aces. Jasmine Chunn registered seven blocks, while libero Mai Zoua Lo had 22 digs.
– Middle school softball
West Rowan defeated China Grove 10-1 on Thursday.
The Bulldogs (2-1) won behind pitcher Michaela White, who gave up one hit while striking out 12.
Kristine South had two doubles and four RBIs. White had three hits and scored three runs.
West plays North Rowan Middle Tuesday.
– Middle school football
Southeast’s eighth-graders beat Knox 34-28 in a wild one as Travis Abbitt scored three touchdowns and made numerous tackles.
Rashaad Vinson scored on a 60-yard halfback pass with no time remaining for the game-winning points.
K.J. Pressley also scored a TD, and Tyler Stamp scored the two-point conversion that tied the game with two minutes left.
Justin Evans forced a fumble in the fourth quarter to help turn things around for the Patriots (2-0).
* West Rowan’s eighth-graders beat Corriher-Lipe 28-14.
Jaylon Johnson had an 80-yard fumble return for a score. Brandon Ijames scored for West on runs of 25 and 70 yards and on a 68-yard kickoff return.
Ijames rushed for 115 yards, Cody Eggers ran for 63 yards and Demetrius Davidson had 43 rushing yards for the Bulldogs (1-0). Davidson and Eggers tacked on two-point conversions.
Other leaders for the Bulldogs were Terrence Polk, Logan Stoodley, Rashard Sherrill, Cody McNeely and Matthew Choi.
– North Hills athletics
North Hills cross country teams finished first in a meet. Harper Miller was second overall.
* Led by Abbey Lane, North Hills Middle soccer won 4-0 against Phoenix Montessori.
* North Hills volleyball beat Hayworth 3-0. Laura Butner and Savannah Daniel led the Eagles.
