The college roundup …
COLLEGE PARK, Md. ó Maryland outplayed California, holding the Golden Bears without a touchdown until the closing minutes.
Coming off a 10-point loss to unheralded Middle Tennessee State, the Terrapins (2-1) were given little chance against a California juggernaut that totaled 104 points in disposing of Michigan State and Pac-10 foe Washington State.
But Da’Rel Scott ran for 87 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with a shoulder injury, Chris Turner threw for scores and the Terps used a relentless defense to harass the Golden Bears (2-1) from the outset.
California scored three touchdowns in the final seven minutes.
Va. Tech 20, Ga. Tech 17
BLACKSBURG, Va. ó Virginia Tech’s youth movement is looking better, and Tyrod Taylor, Darren Evans and an opportunistic defense gave Hokies fans reason for optimism. Taylor and Evans each ran for a touchdown, the Hokies put together a late scoring drive, the defense forced three turnovers and then held on in a harrowing finish.
The Hokies (2-1, 1-0 ACC) drove 76 yards for the winning 21-yard field goal by Dustin Keys after the Yellow Jackets tied it at 17 with 9:28 to play.
FSU 46, Chattanooga 7
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó Christian Ponder threw three first-half touchdown passes and Florida State wrapped up the soft part of its schedule with a 46-7 victory over lower-division Chattanooga. The Seminoles (2-0) had three touchdowns on the board just 12 minutes into the game and led 30-7 at the half.
Connecticut 45, Virginia 10
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. ó Donald Brown ran for 206 yards and three scores and Connecticut had touchdowns on its first four drives in a 45-10 victory over Virginia.
Tennessee 35, UAB 3
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ó Tennessee’s offense improved in a 35-3 win over UAB.
Tennessee (1-1) erased bad memories of a poor offensive effort wrought with mistakes at UCLA two weeks ago against a Blazers defense that ranks as one of the worst in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Three of the Vols’ next four opponents ó No. 4 Florida, No. 9 Auburn and No. 2 Georgia ó will pose a bit more of a challenge.
Coastal 26, Monmouth, 7
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ó Zach MacDowall completed 17 of 26 passes for 233 yards, and a touchdown, to lead Coastal Carolina to its first win of the season ó a 26-7 victory over Monmouth.
