Area sports briefs: Threat of storms alters schedules

With Tropical Storm Hanna looming, some high school football games have been moved up a day.
Carson’s varsity home game against Salisbury will now be played Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
The jayvee game between East and Salisbury will be played on Wednesday, as will North Rowan’s jayvee game at Carson. Game time is 7 p.m.
– Carson’s varsity soccer match against South will be played today before the jayvee game. The doubleheader begins at 4:30 p.m.
– Shive commits
East Rowan pitcher Corbin Shive has verbally committed to Charlotte’s baseball program.
Shive was 6-2 with 43 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA for East as a sophomore and 11-2 with 77 strikeouts in 73 innings and a 1.63 ERA for the 3A state runner-up squad as a junior.
Shive will join former East standouts Ross Steedley and Justin Roland at Charlotte. A story on Shive is upcoming.
– Carson soccer
Carson tied Mooresville 2-2 in NPC soccer Tuesday. Both teams scored in overtime.
Valentin Nava registered both goals for Carson (1-1-2) and has eight on the season. Carson keeper Anel Ramic set a school record with 29 saves.
Mooresville is now 4-0-2.
– Salisbury soccer
Salisbury’s soccer team, playing its first match in a week and a half, overpowered South Rowan 7-0 on Tuesday.
The Hornets (2-0) led 5-0 at halftime and handed coach Tom Sexton his 294th career victory.
“We were semi-pleased with our performance,” Sexton said. “It was good to finally get to play a match, but we’ve got to improve in every facet of the game if we’re going to reach the heights we want to reach this year.”
Oscar Bonilla had three assists, setting up Miles Jordan, Michael Mazur and Daman Bowman for first-half goals.
Jesus Olvera scored on a header that was assisted by Connor Miller, and Will Mason tallied on an assist from Dustin Presnell.
Salisbury got second-half goals from Jordan and Presnell. Bowman and Hunter Fisher had assists.
Keepers Frankie Cardelle, Michael Doran and Scott van der Poel combined on the shutout.
– Prep tennis
Salisbury’s girls tennis team won 8-1 against West Davidson on Tuesday.
Hannah Lebowitz, Kirstin Meyerhoeffer, Brooke Johnson, Shea Comadoll, Joy Loeblein and Erika Nelson won singles matches for the Hornets (5-1, 3-0 CCC).
Doubles victories came from Sarah Truemper-Sun Dragas and Sarah Shirley-Dzenita Sukurica.
Salisbury, tied with Cardinal Gibbons for first place in the latest 2A poll, faces Lexington today and West Rowan on Thursday.
– Carson volleyball
Taylor Whitley served for 24 points and had 20 assists as Carson’s volleyball team beat West Rowan 25-17, 25-8, 25-8 on Tuesday.
Sarah Marshall had 18 digs and 14 service points, and Marissa Sellers had nine digs and 14 service points for the Cougars (4-3, 2-3 NPC).
Amber Ingraham and Shanna Stewart had seven kills each, and Ingraham had two solo blocks.
Jennifer Hough and Breckin Settlemeyer had five kills each.
Carson’s jayvees improved to 3-2 with a 25-17, 25-8 victory over the Falcons. Morgan Griffin, Shirley Marshall and Hannah Leonard combined for 28 service points.
– College volleyball
Catawba senior middle blocker Melissa Powers is the SAC Volleyball Player of the Week.
In a five-game loss to Pfeiffer, Powers notched a school-record 37 kills while hitting at a 41-percent clip. Powers reached double figures in kills in all four matches. She added 12 blocks and six digs.
– Area racing
Taylor Stricklin (West Rowan) won the 50-lap street stocks race at Hickory Motor Speedway on Labor Day.
Stricklin, the pole-sitter, held a commanding lead with two laps left when he made contact with the outside wall on the backstretch. The hit sent him down the track into Robert DiVanna, causing minor damage to the left-front quarter panel of Stricklin’s car.
“That was my fault for trying to run so hard at the end,” Stricklin said.
– Minor Leagues
South Atlantic League baseball franchises in Lake County, Ohio, and Bowling Green, Ky., are moving to the Midwest League for better geographical balance and to reduce travel expenses.
– North boosters
The North Rowan High School boosters club will meet on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the media center. All members and prospective members are encouraged to attend.
– Hurley YMCA
Registration continues for soccer and flag football at the Hurley YMCA until Sept. 8.

– Corbin Hills ladies
The Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association played a “Most of A Kind” event Tuesday.
Beth Calhoun won and was followed by Ruth Bowles, Phyllis Durland and Mary Seaford. Wanda Sanders had low putts.
