WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. ó Marcos Ambrose took advantage of a fortuitous pit stop midway through the Nationwide Zippo 200 on Saturday and easily beat Kyle Busch for his first career NASCAR victory.
Ambrose, from Tasmania, was in the pits on lap 42 when the fourth caution of the 82-lap race flew. He gained the lead on lap 48 but gave it up right away to pit for fuel.
Ambrose slowly worked his way up to third with 12 laps to go as Jeff Burton and Jimmie Johnson battled for the lead. But the two leaders ran out of fuel with three laps remaining and Ambrose coasted to the victory in the No. 59 Ford.
Ambrose was third last week in the rain in Montreal after leading the most laps and second on the road course in Mexico.
IRL
SPARTA, Ky. ó Scott Dixon is starting to look unstoppable.
The New Zealander came from behind Saturday night at Kentucky Speedway, passing Helio Castroneves on the final straightaway to win the Meijer Indy 300. It was the second win in a row and the record-tying sixth victory of the season for Dixon, trying to win his second IndyCar Series championship.
GOLF
BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. ó Just before a thunderstorm hit Oakland Hills and suspended play on Saturday, Andres Romero provided a little thunder of his own.
The 27-year-old native of Argentina tied a competitive course record with a 5-under 65, the best score at the 90th PGA Championship all week.
– STOCKHOLM, Sweden ó Annika Sorenstam shot a 1-under 71 and trailed by two shots after leader Lill Saether tied the course record with a 64 Saturday in the rain-shortened Scandinavian TPC.
Tournament host Sorenstam, who is retiring in December, knows today’s round will be her last as a pro in Sweden. Sorenstam, who grew up north of Stockholm, had a course-record 66 in the first round Thursday.
NBA
LOS ANGELES ó The Los Angeles Lakers agreed to terms with guard Sun Yue, who is playing for China and will face Kobe Bryant and the U.S. men’s team today in the Beijing Olympics.
The 6-foot-9, 212-pound Sun was the Lakers’ second-round draft pick last year. He played with the Aoshen club in Beijing and with the Chinese national team before the Olympics.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
LOS ANGELES ó Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez dislocated his left kneecap and was carted off the practice field.
Sanchez, the projected starter, was injured after making a throw during practice and landing awkwardly. He was taken for X-rays and an MRI, and team doctors say there is no ligament, cartilage or bone damage. He is listed as day-to-day.
Sanchez said he hopes to be back in time for the Trojans’ opener Aug. 30 at Virginia.
TENNIS
LONDON ó French tennis player Mathieu Montcourt was banned from the men’s tour for two months and fined $12,000 after being found guilty of betting on matches.
The No. 152-ranked Montcourt bet on matches between June and September 2005. He did not bet on his own matches, only those involving other players.
