Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was in position to pick up his 11th Eastern League win, but Bowie scored seven runs in four innings against Binghamton’s bullpen and prevailed 9-8 on Wednesday morning. Bowie posted two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Parnell allowed six hits and two runs in five innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Binghamton led 8-2 when Joe Hietpas took over on the mound to begin the bottom of the sixth inning.
The fact that Parnell pitched Wednesday makes him an unlikely choice to fill in as a spot starter for the New York Mets this weekend.
* Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) was the winning pitcher in relief for New Britain in an 11-7 Eastern League victory against New Hampshire on Wednesday.
Ward pitched scoreless ball for 21/3 innings and raised his record to 3-6.
– Coastal Plain League
Appalachian State’s Wes Hobson helped Thomasville win the CPL regular-season championship.
Hobson hit .303 with eight doubles, four home runs and 31 RBIs in 55 games in the wood bat league to help the Hi-Toms post a 37-19 record.
Hobson is the son of former North Rowan athlete Gil Hobson.
* Blake Ketner (Catawba) pitched for Thomasville and had a 3-4 record and a 3.82 ERA in 21 outings, 20 in relief.
* Asheboro hurler Alex Fairweather (Catawba) led the CPL in strikeouts with 79.
* Former Kannapolis Dixie Youth teammates Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) and Ryan Query (A.L. Brown, Catawba) were the leading run-producers for Asheboro.
Wagner hit a team-best .323 while driving in 34 runs and stealing 16 bases. Query batted .245 with six homers and 30 RBIs.
* Chris Ahearn (Catawba) batted .248 for Asheboro and scored 22 runs.
* Brett Hatley (West Rowan, Catawba) was 1-0 with one save in 14 appearances on the mound for Asheboro.
* Wade Moore (West) batted .277 with 38 runs scored and 15 steals for Forest City, which set league attendance records. The Owls drew 63,3391 fans.
* Keegan Linza (North Rowan) had a 3-5 record and a 3.12 ERA for Columbia. He struck out 39 in 60 2/3 innings.
* Shive unbeaten
Right-hander Corbin Shive (East Rowan) finished his summer with the South Charlotte Panthers showcase-tournament baseball team with an 8-0 record.
– ASU baseball
Appalachian State opens the 2009 baseball season with a home series against Jacksonville that will be played at Elon’s stadium on Feb. 20-22.
– Moyer: UAB grad assistant
Scott Moyer (South Rowan) has accepted a graduate assistant position with UAB football and will handle film duties for the Blazers while he works on his masters degree in physical education.
Moyer was a standout offensive lineman at South and was on the Catawba team before suffering a knee injury his freshman year. After the injury, he worked with the coaching staff and in the video coordinating department, filming and digitalizing games and practices.
Catawba coaches then helped Moyer land the opportunity to continue his education and stay involved with football at UAB.
– East-West football
Football coaches for the East-West All-Star Game to be played July 22, 2009, in Greensboro have been announced.
The West head coach is Lincolton’s Scott Cloninger. Assistants will be Barclay Marsh (Mooresville), Steve Maennie (T.C. Roberson), Alex Mebane (Trinity), Baxter Morris (Albemarle) and Dee Walsh (Robbinsville).
The East head coach is Raymond Cobb (SW Edgecombe). Assistants will be Grover Battle (Northern Nash), Brian Foster (Southern Nash), Kenneth Grantham (Greene Central), Ken Whitehurst (D.H. Conley) and Jimmy Williams (East Wake).
– Prep football book on sale
The 17th Annual North Carolina Prep Football News costs $12 and is available at Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove and Phidippides in Concord.
The publication, produced by Arnold Solomon and Deana King, contains previews, lists of top returners and schedules for every high school team in the state, plus plenty of predictions and photos. West Rowan running back K.P. Parks is listed on the publication’s preseason All-State team.
– South Rowan football
Season ticket holders for South Rowan football should pick up their tickets today at the school.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on Aug. 11 at 8 a.m.
* A football jamboree will be held at South Rowan on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m.
* The South Boosters Club is selling chicken dinners for $7. Tickets will be on sale Saturday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. until noon in Donnell Stadium.
– South Rowan tennis
Girls tennis practice at South begins today at 8 a.m.
Prospects need to report to the tennis courts and have a physical.
– Spencer fall league
Spencer Little League will continue registration for fall baseball and girls softball on Friday, Aug. 8, from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9-2 at the ballfield on 8th Street.
Coach pitch, junior, major and minor baseball, as well as girls softball leagues will be offered for ages 5-14. The registration fee is $30.
League play will begin the first week in September.
Spencer “Fall Ball” is offered as instructional leagues and allows players of all skill levels to learn and participate.

– China Grove softball
The China Grove Youth Baseball League is offering girls softball this fall for the first time.
The league is for ages 6-13.
If you are interested in participating in the program, go to Dale’s Sporting Goods in China Grove and pick up a registration form.
The cost is $45.

– Gillespie shortens list
The Statesville Record and Landmark reports that Statesville basketball point guard Keyrra Gillespie has trimmed her list of schools to Clemson, Florida, Florida State and Georgia Tech.
Gillespie averaged 15.2 points, 8.2 assists, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 steals per game as a junior.
– Catawba softball
Catawba softball coaches will hold an open tryout for high school seniors on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The tryout will be held at Whitley Field on the Catawba campus.
