Local Golf: Honeycutt leads Amateur qualifying

Stan Honeycutt, who captured the recent Country Club of Salisbury championship, won the qualifying medal for the 30th annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur at Corbin Hills Golf Club on Sunday.
Honeycutt posted a 3-under-par 69 to lead the field of qualifiers. He earned one of the two seeded positions.
The other seeded spot will be held by defending champion Keith Dorsett, who did not have to qualify.
Honeycutt posted a 2-under 34 on the front nine and finished with a 1-under 35 on the back side. ‘
Taking second in qualifying with a 71 was Dusty Holder. Posting 72s were David Boger, Derek Lipe and Steve Gegorek.
Ronnie Eidson,who captured the recent Rowan Masters at the Warrior Golf Club in China Grove, and Roy Dixon, a 15-year-old Salisbury High student, followed with 73s. Dixon was runnerup to Honeycutt in the Country Club event.
The low 31 qualifiers will join Dorsett to compete for the Amateur crown. The tourney will get under way Friday at Corbin Hills Golf Club.
The second round will follow on Saturday, and the championship will be decided Sunday.
A portion of Sunday’s qualifying round was completed in a heavy rain.
