Defending champion Keith Dorsett nipped Derek Paschal in the match of the day in the first round of the Rowan Masters Tournament at Warrior Golf Club on Friday.
Dorsett made six birdies and an eagle to beat Paschal 1-up. Paschal shot an 81 in his qualifying round and was the lowest seed (No. 32) in the tournament.
Both golfers eagled No. 13. Paschal made four birdies and one bogey.
Richard Cobb, Ken Clarke, Todd Janssen, Ronnie Eidson, Michael Dorsett, Gerald Staton, Jason Meadows, Matt Ray, Steve Gegorek, Steven Harvey, Ron Mangum, Tyler Brown, Phil Miller, Joey Boley and Mallory McDaniel also advanced to the second round.
Cobb and Eidson were 2-under. Michael Dorsett and Staton were 1-under.

n Tarheel Junior golf
Local golfers Johnny Kyger and Alex Lee did well in a Tarheel Junior Golf tournament held in Sanford.
Kyger shot 75 to tie for second in the 16-18 boys division. Lee shot 78 and tied for 14th.
n Legion baseball
Lexington tightened the race in the Southern Division of Area III by beating Mooresville 8-6 on Friday.
Lexington ace Clay Watson, who has signed with Catawba, was the winning pitcher. Aubrey Meadows took the loss.
n Palomino baseball
Salisbury defeated Carson 9-0 in Palomino action earlier this week.
Salisbury had a four-run second inning and a three-run fourth.
Dakota Brown, Forrest Buchanan, Ben Ijames, and Anthony Ijames had two hits each to pace the Salisbury squad.
Alex Britt, who worked six innings, and Brown combined on a three-hitter.
“Alex pitched as well as I’ve seen him pitch,” Salisbury coach Scott Maddox said.
Salisbury (4-1) pounded out 11 hits and defeated the Greensboro Elks 9-6 in the nightcap.
Robbie Ijames had three hits and two RBIs to lead Salisbury. David Ijames had two hits and four stolen bases. Frankie Cardelle added two hits.
Travis Swaim (North Davidson) pitched the first 42/3 innings for the Salisbury team and got relief help from Ben Ijames and Forrest Buchanan, who notched a save.
Salisbury plays today at Salisbury High against the Greensboro Spirits, a team made up of players from Ledford, Kernersville Glenn, Parkland and East Davidson. Game time is 2 p.m.

n Intimidators baseball
The Kannapolis Intimidators ran their season-high winning streak to four games with a 8-2 win over Greensboro at NewBridge Bank Park in front of 7,658 fans on Friday.
Kannapolis (6-3) got a two-run double from Christian Marrero and a three-run homer from Mark Fleisher.
Intimidators starter Charlie Shirek (3-4) shut down the powerful Grasshoppers, allowing just two solo home runs. Shirek scattered four hits over seven innings for his third victory of the season.
Fleisher’s home run extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

n Salisbury soccer
Salisbury’s soccer program will offer a skills camp from July 21-24 and a team camp from July 28-Aug. 1, with both being held at the practice facility at old Wiley School field.
The skills camp costs $50 and includes a match ball and soccer T-shirt, while the team camp costs $90 and includes a match ball, soccer T-shirt and soccer hoodie.
Each camp runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a reduced price of $100 covers both camps. Daily rate is $23. Any player registering before July 15 will receive a free camp visor.
The camp is for boys and girls from the Salisbury High district who attend Knox, North Hills, Sacred Heart, Salisbury Academy, and Southeast middle schools and Salisbury High. Registration forms are available at each of those schools.
Campers should bring standard soccer attire, their own water bottle, any medical needs, proof of insurance and an athletic physical. Fruit, ice, fluids and training supplies will be provided.
Coaches Tom Sexton, Matt Parrish and Megan Robinson will lead the camp, along with goalkeeper coach Daniel Guertin (Emory University).

n Pfeiffer baseball camp
The Pfeiffer Baseball camp will have two sessions this summer for ages 6-16.
The first camp will run July 14-18 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The second camp is from July 21-25 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The fee is $100. Pfeiffer coaches and players will run the camps.
