South Rowan’s American Legion team held off Mocksville 7-5 on Saturday at the South field.
South (6-4, 3-1) won its fifth in a row. Randy Shepherd limited Mocksville to three runs through seven innings and got relief help from Alex Ingold and Walker Snow. Snow had two strikeouts with the bases full in the ninth for his second save in two nights.Ryan Bostian tripled and doubled. Snow went 2-for-3. Joseph Basinger also had two hits.
South takes on first-place Lexington (4-2, 4-0) tonight at Holt-Moffitt Field.
n Garrett Furr was the winning pitcher as Concord topped Kannapolis and hurler Ryan Overcash 10-7. Grayson Thompson hit a two-run homer for Kannapolis.
n Intimidators loseLuis Sierra drove in two runs for the Kannapolis Intimidators in an 8-3 loss at Lexington on Saturday. Danny Jordan had a sac fly for the other run.
n College regionalsWhit Merrifield (Davie County) had two RBIs for South Carolina in a 15-8 victory against Charlotte on Friday.
n North Carolina’s Ryan Graepel, whose mother, Lisa , is a China Grove native, went 3-for-5 and scored three runs in a 16-8 victory against Mount St. Mary’s on Friday.
n Coastal Plain LeagueJerry Sands (Catawba) homered in the eighth inning to lift the Wilson Tobs to a 2-1 victory against the Florence Red Wolves on Friday.
n Minor leagues
New Britain’s Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) pitched 12/3 scoreless innings while allowing two hits in a 2-1 victory against Trenton on Friday.
n College golfWill Collins (Salisbury) shot 78-78-71 รณ 227 and led Virginia’s golf team at the NCAA Championships held at West Lafayette, Ind.
Collins had four birdies on the back side in his round on Saturday to shoot 1-under.
Virginia stood 26th after 54 holes and didn’t make the final cut. Fifteen teams, including Charlotte moved on to play 18 more holes.
