Matt Mariano pitched the Kannapolis American Legion team to a 14-7 victory over Wilkes at Veterans Field on Tuesday.
Jacob Wright, Alex Edwards, Jason Brown, Wesley Honeycutt and Daniel Welch had two hits each for Kannapolis.
n Mocksville lost to Lexington 6-3.
Lexington’s Clay Watson, a North Davidson standout who has signed with Catawba, pitched eight innings and struck out 13 batters.
Zach Russell-Myers had three hits, including a homer and a double to lead Mocksville (4-2, 1-1). Heath Boyd and Seth Miller had two hits each.
n South Junior Legion wins
South Rowan’s Junior American Legion team opened with a 2-1 victory against Stanly at the South field on Tuesday.
D.J. Webb was the winning pitcher. Jonie Bautista homered.
South was held to three hits. Stanly had six.
Dan Hogue is coach of the South Juniors.
South Rowan plays at West Forsyth on Thursday.
n Middle school baseball
Play in the Rowan County Middle School Conference baseball tournament began at China Grove on Tuesday.
Third-seeded West Rowan edged No. 6 seed North Rowan 6-5. Matt Miller was the winning pitcher. Taylor Garczynski and Hunter Teeter led the Bulldogs offensively.
Tyler Wyatt, Josh Mock and Rhett Hellard were the big sticks for the Mavericks.
n No. 4 seed Corriher-Lipe shut out No. 5 seed Southeast2-0 behind the pitching of Matt Miller. Parker Hubbard and Nathan Lambert led the Yellow Jackets offensively.
n China Grove, the No. 2 seed, is scheduled to take on No. 7 Knox today at 4:30 p.m., while No. 1 Erwin faces Corriher-Lipe at 6:30 p.m.
Semifinals are Thursday and the championship game will be played on Friday.
n Scooter Sherrill camp
The inaugural Scooter Sherrill basketball skills camp will be held July 21-24 at Carson High.
The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades 6-through-12 next school year.
It runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. It will include fundamental basketball skills and drills to focus on the individual improvement of each camper.

n Salisbury Academy tennis
Salisbury Academy’s coed tennis team recently won the PAC-8 Conference championship. The Jaguars defeated Woodlawn 6-0 for their first tennis title.
Members of the team are Chad Hoskins, Michael Ogden, Alan Lebowitz, Joy Loeblein, Erika Nelson, Brock Overcash and Thatcher Shields.
n GARS event
Sixty-two GARS members played at Lexington Country Club on Tuesday.
Low ‘A’ flight player was Nelson Earnhardt, with a net of 62.12.
Low ‘B’ flight player was Everett Hancock Sr. with a net of 64.48.
Low ‘C’ flight player was Clarence Derrick, with a net of 65.06.Bobby Bryant was Low ‘D’ player with a net of 70.08.
n Baseball camp
Davidson’s Dick Cooke and Appalachian State’s Chris Pollard will head a baseball camp at Central Davidson on June 16-17. The Piedmont Area Pitcher and Catcher Camp is for ages 6-18 and runs from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. both days.
The cost is $60. Other area coaches, including Central Davidson’s Jonathan Brown, will help with the camp.
