Desco Inc. purchased the electrical segment of Davidson Electric Wholesale Supply locations from Ferguson Enterprises effective April 28.

The purchase involves certain inventory of Ferguson’s electrical product line located in Lexington and Mocksville, which was part of Ferguson’s 2006 acquisition of Davidson. Ferguson will maintain its plumbing business and will continue to operate from its 1122 Main St., Lexington, location.
Desco will relocate the Lexington branch to its 950 Talbert Blvd. site and will continue to operate the Mocksville operation at 657 Wilkesboro St.
Desco has been in the electrical wholesale business since 1960. The Mocksville store will be its sixth. Other branches are in Albemarle, Lexington, Mooresville and Statesville, with the Salisbury store the headquarters and central warehouse.
Hospital honored
VHA Inc., a national health-care alliance, has given Rowan Regional Medical Center a 2008 VHA Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence, honoring the hospital for meeting or exceeding national performance standards.
The hospital was honored at VHA’s Leadership Conference in Philadelphia on May 4 for prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia in patients in the intensive care and coronary care units.
“This award validates the dedicated focus of our clinical staff and physicians in pursuing excellence in the care provided to our critical care patients,” said Chuck Elliott, chief executive officer of Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Trent Haywood, chief medical officer at VHA, said, “Intensive care patients are extremely vulnerable to infections. Rowan Regional Medical Center has achieved what was once thought of as unattainable ó zero cases of VAP over a long period of time. That’s quite an accomplishment.”
Rowan Regional Medical Center has gone 31 months without an incident of ventilator-associated pneumonia, which leads the region. Patients in critical care are often sicker than other patients and more susceptible to complications such as ventilator-associated pneumonia.
LSA national board
Ted W. Goins Jr., president of Salisbury-based Lutheran Services for the Aging, has been elected to the Board of Lutheran Services in America, a national alliance of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and their related social ministries.
“Lutheran Services in America is comprised of over 300 health and human service organizations that provide thousands of hours of care and services in thousands of communities throughout the United States and the Caribbean,” said Goins. “It is a privilege to be a part of an organization that touches so many lives.”
Goins was named president of Lutheran Services for the Aging in 2000. He was administrator of Lutheran Home-Hickory and worked for Lutheran Services for the Aging in administration and development.
Goins and his wife, Cheryl, live in Salisbury.
Genesis awards
Fifteen employees received service awards for the first quarter of 2008 at the May general staff meeting of the Salisbury Center of Genesis Healthcare.
The awards were presented by Patrick Foley, administrator, in appreciation of devoted service and demonstration of the facility’s core values.
Honorees are:
Nursing: Shireda Fleming and Millicent McCray, three years; Angela Shanks and Barbara Woods, five years; Nina Howard and Wendy Safrit, 15 years.

Moose nominated
Mary Moose has been nominated for a 2008 Women in Business Achievement Award given by the Charlotte Business Journal.
These awards recognize the top 25 area businesswomen for their business accomplishments over the past year.
Moose is founder and president of Victory Wealth Management Inc. in China Grove, a registered principal with Advantage Capital Corp., a Registered Financial Consultant and a senior advocate who serves on the Board of Directors of Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.
RCCC training courses
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is offering two, single-day courses in ControlLogix Systems.
The short courses are designed to help improve performance, increase production uptime and reduce dependency on outside vendors for emergency service.
Those interested in the training can choose from a level-one basics course or a level-two troubleshooting course.
RCCC will offer the “Basics of ControlLogix Systems” June 3 and “Introduction to ControlLogix Troubleshooting” June 4, both from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Registration fee for each class is $50. Both focus on the Logix5000 System and will meet at RCCC’s Cabarrus Business & Technology Center, 660 Parkway North, Concord.
The courses are designed for electrical maintenance and engineering technicians who have experience maintaining electrically controlled systems, basic Microsoft Windows navigation skills, plus a working knowledge of common ladder logic instructions. The level-one basics class or similar knowledge is a prerequisite for the level-two troubleshooting class.
Kyle Swing of Rockwell Automation, an RCCC continuing education and focused industry training instructor, will teach the course.
