Area briefs: Waller ends great college career

Belmont Abbey designated hitter Seth Waller (West Rowan) drove in two runs in an 18-9 loss to Columbus State in the D-II South Atlantic Regional that ended the Crusadersí strong season on Saturday.
Patrick Atwell (South Rowan) had two hits and scored two runs for Belmont Abbey. Atwell still has one more season of eligibility.
* Top-ranked Mount Olive beat USC Aiken 13-2 in the South Atlantic Regional championship game on Sunday to force a second championship game.
It was suspended in the eighth inning by rain and high wind and will be resumed this morning with Mount Olive leading 4-2 in the eighth inning.
* Belmontís Daniel Wagner (South) had five hits in a series with Mercer, but the Bruins dropped two of three games.
* Whit Merrifield (Davie County) scored a run for South Carolina in a 10-8 victory over Tennessee on Saturday that clinched a berth in the SEC tournament for the Gamecocks (39-19, 15-15).
– Minor leagues
Binghamtonís Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) was the losing pitcher in a 10-5 setback to Erie on Sunday. Parnell (3-3) pitched five innings and allowed six runs. He walked five and struck out five.
* New Britainís Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) continued a dominant season with a scoreless inning on Sunday that lowered his ERA from 0.36 to 0.35.
– Legion baseball
South Rowanís scheduled game with Randolph County was rained out on Sunday. The teams are scheduled to play at Asheboroís McCrary Park tonight in a non-league game.
* South Rowan has moved Wednesdayís scheduled league game with Lexington back to June 1. Lexington is still waiting for players to arrive from 4A playoff contender North Davidson.
* Mooresville has postponed a game with Cherryville and cancelled two contests with Denver because of Mooresville Highís run in the 3A state playoffs.
* Rowan opens at Kernersville Friday.
– Prep softball
East Rowanís third-round opponent will be decided tonight when Reagan plays at SW Randolph. East would be home against Reagan on Tuesday, but it would travel to Asheboro to play SWR.
