Kelsea Kluttz homered, tripled and doubled in her first three at-bats and Chelsea White took charge on the mound to lead East Rowan to a 14-0 romp over Asheboro in a first-round game of the 3A state softball playoffs in Granite Quarry on Tuesday.
Haley Barrier singled home Ericka Nesbitt for a quick 1-0 lead. Kayla Potts’ double made it 2-0. Kluttz’s homer capped a six-run first inning.
Back-to-back doubles by Potts and Chelsea White, Mallory Drew’s single and a triple by Kluttz made it 9-0 in the second.
Potts’ third hit, Drew’s two-run triple and a ground-rule double by Kluttz highlighted a five-run third for the Mustangs (18-3).
SPC No. 2 seed Parkwood (14-9) plays at East Rowan in the second round. Parkwood was a 6-0 winner over Winston-Salem Parkland.
* Defending 3A champion Southwestern Randolph (20-2-1) took advantage of four errors and beat Carson 10-0 in six innings.
The Cougars finished 11-11.
* West Rowan (17-4) finished its season with a 4-3 loss at St. Stephens.
* Northwest Cabarrus lost 4-1 to T.C. Roberson.
– College baseball
South Carolina outfielder Whit Merrifield (Davie County) is being touted for Freshman All-America honors. He is batting .320 with 49 runs scored, and he has 23 mult-hit games.
Merrifield is 9-for-9 on steals, and he has started 51 of 52 games for the Gamecocks (34-18).
* Charlotte catcher Ross Steedley (East Rowan) is batting .262 with one homer and seven RBIs. The freshman has played in 22 games for the 49ers (38-13), with 19 starts.He’s been charged with only one error behind the plate.
* Belmont’s Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) had five hits and four RBIs as the Bruins took two out of three in their weekend series with Campbell.
Wagner is batting .299 with two homers, 12 doubles and 25 RBIs. He’s 14-for-16 on steals and will be playing in the Coastal Plain League this summer.
* Eastern Kentucky’s McKenzie Willoughby (Davie) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning on Sunday, but the Colonels lost to Samford in extra innings.
Willoughby, a senior, is 1-3, mostly in relief. He has a 2.93 ERA in 18 appearances and has fanned 44 in 46 innings.
– College softball
Charlotte’s Serena Smith (NW Cabarrus) broke the school record for hits in a season with 71 and was named to the all-tournament team for the Alantic 10.
* Walters State freshman Gina Loflin (West Rowan) finished the season strong in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region VII tournament.
Loflin had a two-run single and a two-run double in a victory over Roane State, produced two singles in a loss against Columbia State and hit a homer for Walters State’s only run in a season-ending loss against Motlow State.
Walters State (Tenn.) finished 32-18.
– 2A boys golf
Cardinal Gibbons held off defending champion Ledford to win the NCHSAA boys golf championships by one shot at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
Ledford nipped Cardinal Gibbons for the title last season.

– Intimidators win
Logan Johnson homered and scored three runs as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat Delmarva 5-0 on Tuesday.
Kannapolis received six shutout innings from starter Anthony Carter (4-0).
Hector Santiago combined with Carter on the shutout. Santiago pitched the final three innings for his first save of the year.
The Intimidators and Shorebirds play the third game of the four-game set tonight at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
– Middle school baseball
Southeast defeated Corriher-Lipe 7-6 on Tuesday.
Chase Johnson had two hits to lead Southeast, and K.J. Pressley had a double. Andy Austin, Greg Tonnesen had one hit apiece. Austin was winning pitcher.
Southeast (6-6, 4-6) plays Knox at home Thursday.
Jordan Kennerly four hits for Corriher-Lipe (7-6, 5-6). Parker Hubbard and Blake Sechler had two hits apiece.
* Curtis Ward and Gavin Wike had three hits apiece as Erwin defeated West Rowan 16-5. Ward also was the winning pitcher, striking out seven batters in six innings.
Bradley Robbins had a home run for Erwin (11-1). Matt Miller had two hits and two runs for West.
– Middle school soccer
Southeast’s soccer team beat China Grove 5-1 on Thursday.
Jordy Sanchez had two goals for Southeast. Also scoring were Freddy Jaimes, Jose Hernandez and Cristian Mendoza.
Logan Stamper, Adolfo Reyes, Eduardo Carrillo and Mendoza led the Southeast defense.
The Patriots take on Knox today.
– Bobby Jackson camp
The 12th annual Bobby Jackson Basketball Camp will be held on July 20-24 at Hall Gym, Livingstone and Salisbury High.
The camp focuses on fundamentals, conditioning and leadership skills.
* The Bobby Jackson Summer League for boys and girls costs $50 per player.
There will be a girls league and boys leagues for middle school and high school.
Registration is Saturday from 10-2 at Salisbury High.
Opening ceremonies for the league are on June 13. Games will be played at Salisbury, Livingstone and Hall Gym.

– Carson boys hoops camp
The second annual Cougar Basketball Camp will take place July 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carson gym.
The camp is for boys and girls who will be in grades second-through-six next school year. All campers will receive T-shirts, and awards will be given for free-throw and hot-shot contests.

– Pfeiffer camp
The Pfeiffer Baseball camp will have two sessions this summer for ages 6-16.
The first camp will run July 14-18 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The second camp is from July 21-25 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
The fee is $100. T-shirts will be provided. Campers should report to the Pfeiffer baseball field between 8-8:50 a.m. each day.
Pfeiffer coaches and players will run the camps.

The West Rowan basketball team is sponsoring a captain’s choice golf tournament at Foxwood on May 17.
The fee is $35 per player for the 1 p.m. shotgun start. There will be prizes, mulligans and tee-busters.

West Rowan Falcon Basketball Camp for boys and girls will be held June 16-19.
West Rowan boys coach Mike Gurley directs the camp at the school. West players will help with the camp.

Camp for rising 2nd-6th graders is from 9 until noon.
Camp for rising 7th-9th graders is from 1-4 p.m.
