Avery, Jacobs shine at NPC meet

Justin Avery had three first-place finishes to carry West Rowan’s boys to second place in the NPC track meet Wednesday, and Olivia Jacobs won two races to lead South Rowan’s girls to a third-place showing.
Mooresville won the boys event with a total of 207 points. West was next with 68 ó two more than Northwest Cabarrus had and three more than county champion East Rowan compiled.
Avery’s victories came in the 100 meters (10.8 seconds), 200 (22.1) and 400 (49.6). The Falcons also placed well in the 4×200 relay (second), 4×100 (third) and 4×400 (third). Avery, Jordan Lilly, Clay Browning and Trey Mashore are members of the 4×200 team.
Mashore, also a 4×100 runner, took third in the long jump.
Cameron Brown helped East with a second-place finish in the pole vault, and Jacobius Jones was third in the triple jump. Nolan Stehr, Nathan Robbins and Josh Patch took second, third and fourth, respectively, in the shot put.
B.J. Grant won the high jump with an effort of 6 feet, 5 inches to pace South’s seventh-place boys. Nathaniel Winslow took third in the 800 and was part of a third-place 4×800 team.
Tenth-place Carson picked up its points thanks a fourth-place finish by Daniel Yates in the 200.
n Northwest Cabarrus won the girls competition with a total of 143.83 points, and Mooresville was next with 100.33. South had 69.
Jacobs, the NPC’s runner of the year for the entire season, won the 1,600 (5:34) and 3,200 (12:41). She was fifth in the 800 and ran for the fourth-place 4×800 team.
South also got wins from throwers Taylor May (discus, 95-4) and Katherine Van Wieren (shot put, 32-2). Emily Kinney took third in the 800.
Carson’s girls tied West Iredell for seventh place. Clarissa Beaty was second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Sierra Zemanick finished second in the 800, and Courtney Cress placed third in the high jump.
Ayana Avery’s second-place showing in the high jump helped West Rowan finish ninth. Desire Cross was third in the shot put and fifth in the discus.
East Rowan’s girls placed 10th, but they got a win from Jenny Hughes in the 800 (2:28).
