The 27th annual Edgar Welch Memorial Golf Tournament for women, the only county event of its kind, will be played at two local courses next month.
Eighteen holes of the 36-hole event will be played on March 13 at Corbin Hills. The final round is set for the Country Club of Salisbury on May 15.
Teams will consist of two players. Best -ball scores wlll be used. Defending champions are Sharon Miller and Yvonne Barger.
The tourney is open to Rowan female golfers. They must be club members with established handicaps.
Both rounds begin at 9 a. m. A luncheon and awards ceremony follows the final round.
The tournament honors the late Welch, a local professional golfer and sporting goods store owner.
n Ace at Warrior
Al Micheal made a hole-in-one at Warrior Golf Club on Saturday.
He aced the 170-yard No. 12 hole with a 5-iron. The feat was witnessed by Tom Stepko and Jenni Stepko.
n Iredell/Rowan golf
The Iredell/Rowan Golf Association won 11-4 in a Ryder Cup format match with the Golf Players Association of Raleigh on Saturday.
Leading the way for the IRGA was 69-year-old Salisbury resident Dave Boger, who shot a 63 from the back tees at McCanless.
n Catawba lacrosse
Kurt Green and Nick Desper scored three goals each for Catawba’s lacrosse team, but the Indians (7-8) closed the season with a 10-9 loss to powerhouse Limestone (12-1).
n College baseball
Ominous weather forecasts have postponed Catawba’s games scheduled for Newman Park on Monday.
n Appalachian State’s Garrett Sherrill (A.L. Brown) ended an 8-7 victory against Davidson on Saturday with a strikeout with the bases loaded. Brett Shore (South Rowan) went 3-for-3 for Davidson.
n Prep baseball
Trevor Leonard and Chaz Frank had three hits apiece to lead Central Davidson to a 9-6 victory over Ragsdale at Finch Field on Saturday.
n NPC softball
Carson tightened its grip on sixth place and the NPC’s final state playoff berth with a 5-3 road win against North Iredell on Friday.
Alex Mendillo had three hits for the Cougars, who improved to 7-8 in the league with three games left.
Megan Meismer pitched for Carson.
