North Rowan lost to Central Davidson 2-1 in a CCC baseball game on Tuesday, despite another strong pitching performance by Billy Veal.
Veal hit his second homer for North’s only run.
Trevor Leonard struck out nine batters for the Spartans (11-7, 7-3) and knocked in the winning run in the sixth.
* North lost to Forbush 11-1 last Friday. Veal had the only hit for the Cavaliers.
* Alex Grubb went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead West Davidson to a 12-2 CCC victory over Lexington. Jordan Hudson threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out nine Jackets.
* A.L. Brown got two homers from Jacob Wright and beat Piedmont 6-4 to snap a skid in the SPC.
John Tuttle was the winning pitcher in relief, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. Matt Grimes started on the mound and pitched into the fifth inning.
Zach Wright made his first start behind the plate this season and had a key double in the sixth when the Wonders scored the deciding runs.
* Ryan Coleman fanned 10 and pitched a complete game to lead East Davidson to a 4-1 victory over Trinity.
* Northwest Cabarrus got strong pitching and a home run from Matt Mariano and beat Statesville 8-1 for an NPC win.
Hunter Pate also homered for the Trojans.
* Dylan West’s two-out, three-run homer in the sixth helped Mooresville force extra innings against Lake Norman and the Blue Devils won 6-4 in the ninth to move into second place in the NPC.
Lake Norman left Nick Lomascolo cruised until the sixth. Nathan Abraham and John Crucitti knocked in runs for the Blue Devils in the ninth.
– Intimidators win
The Kannapolis Intimidators rolled over the Greensboro Grasshoppers 8-1 on Tuesday.
Johnnie Lowe pitched five shutout innings for the Intimidators.
John Curtis had a two-run triple to highlight the best offensive performance of the season by the Intimidators. Christian Marrero hit a sole homer in the ninth.
– College baseball
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Zachary Glass (Salisbury) had an RBI single in a 4-3 loss to St. Andrews on Tuesday.
* Elon’s Greg Annarummo belted three home runs and drove in 10 runs and fellow freshman Neal Pritchard had six RBIs to lead Elon to a 19-10 victory over Wake Forest on Tuesday.
– Minor leagues
Binghamton’s Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) started but go no-decision on Monday.
Parnell worked five innings against Trenton and allowed four hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out one and was touched for homers by New York Yankees prospects Matt Carson and P.J. Pilittere.
– East football
Five East Rowan football players have accepted offers from Division III programs.
Offensive lineman Josh Eury and linebacker Chase Burris are headed to Averett.
Fullback/linebacker Matt Mitchell is bound for Methodist.
Offensive lineman C.J. Gordy and tight end Aaron French will join Guilford’s program.
– Prep softball
East Rowan stayed on top of the NPC, taking advantage of eight errors and pounding South Rowan 12-0 on Tuesday.
n West Rowan scored three times in the sixth to beat Carson 4-1.
– Prep golf
Salisbury shot 159 at Crescent on Tuesday and finished second to Ledford’s 145 in a CCC match.
After their best round of the season, the Hornets are second by one shot in the overall standings with one match to go. Salisbury freshman Roy Dixon shot 35 for medalist honors. Clint Riddle had a 39, while Randy Almeida shot 41 and Zack Kirchin shot 44.
North Rowan shot 203 and finished seventh. Dillon Mason shot 47 and Jon Robertson shot 48 to lead North.
– GARS
Thirty-four GARS members competed in the Salisbury-Rowan Senior Games at Crescent Golf Club on Monday.
Twenty-four members played at McCanless on Monday. Low ‘A’ flight player was Gordon Correll with a net of 59.91. Low ‘B’ player was Clive Mahaffety with a net of 62.25. Low ‘C’ player was Donald Martin with a net of 63.52. Low ‘D’ player was Harold Caudill with a net of 66.17.
– Middle school baseball
Southeast beat Knox 13-3. Ethan Free was the winning pitcher for the Patriots (4-4, 2-4). Andy Austin had three hits, including a homer, while Louis Kraft and Greg Tonneson had two hits each.
– Jayvee baseball
West Rowan beat Carson 6-5 in eight innings on Tuesday.
Ethan Marsh pitched six strong innings for the Falcons. Justin Morris got the win.
Hayden Foster and Morris had two hits each for the Falcons (12-6, 7-4).
– Jayvee softball
West Rowan beat Carson 10-6. The winning pitcher for the Falcons (3-8) was Leighann Russell.
– Corbin Hills golf
The Corbin Hill Ladies Golf Association played in a low gross- low net event on Tuesday.
Ruth Bowles won first-place low gross and was followed by Miriam Gruber and Beth Calhoun.
First-place low net was won by D.J. Whitfield. She was followed by Sharon Deal and Mary Seaford.
Low putts went to Susan Morris, and second went to Joy Maughmer.
– Woody honored
Carson football coach Mark Woody will be honored by the NCHSAA on May 1 as one of the winners of the Homer Thompson Memorial Eight Who Make a Difference award.
– Salisbury Bobcats
The Salisbury Bobcats 16-under USSSA team, formerly the Salisbury Kings, who finished fifth in the USSSA Nationals in Ft. Wayne, Ind., in 2007, won their first tournament of the season.
The Bobcats were 4-0 in the South Carolina Spring Qualifier, beating teams from Columbia, S.C., and Gastonia.
Darius Moose (Carson) led the Bobcats in the tournament with 77 points, 58 rebounds and 18 assists. B.J. Sherrill (West Rowan) made 12 3-pointers.
Other Bobcat team members are Phillip Ajayi, Quentin Sifford and Riley Weber (East Rowan), Greg Sims II, Roge Givens and Keith Davidson (North Rowan), Dominique Phillips and Bryson Brown (Salisbury), Kajuan Phillips (West Rowan) and DJ Duncan (South Iredell).
Greg Sims, Greg Tinsley and Paul Weber coach the Bobcats.
– Middle school golf
Erwin’s golf team defeated China Grove 156-173 at Warrior on Tuesday.
James Lohr and Conner Lowman led Erwin with 37s. Jared Deveileger and Jared Hough shot 41s.
Alex Austin led China Grove with a 39. Ryan Craft shot 41, Spencer Knowles 45 and Dalton Parrot 48.
Emily Cleveland shot a 57 for the Erwin girls.
– Babe Ruth
Registration for the Rowan County Babe Ruth baseball program runs through May 10.
The program is for ages 13-15, as of April 30, 2008. Cost is $65 per player.

Games will be played during June at China Grove Middle.

– West baseball camps
West Rowan summer baseball camps are upcoming.
On June 17-20 (Tuesday-Friday), a camp will be held for ages 7-9.
On June 23-27 (Monday-Friday), a camp will be held for ages 9-12.
On July 14-18 (Monday-Friday), a camp will be held for ages 12-14.
Those three camps are limited to 12 participants.
A pitchers camp for ages 9-14, with a maximum of 15 participants, will be held on July 21-25.
On July 28-Aug. 1, a defense camp will be held for ages 9-14, with a maximum of 15 participants.
Camps are $110, except the camp for ages 7-9, which is $100.
Camps run from 9-3 Monday-Thursday and 9-noon on Friday, except the ages 7-9 camp, which runs 9-3 all four days.

– Wingate wins
Wingate won the SAC’s Athletic Excellence Award for the 2007-08 school year.
The Bulldogs nipped Tusculum. Carson-Newman was third and Newberry fourth. Catawba finished fifth.
– Catawba baseball
Catawba is ranked 21st in the national media poll this week.
Thursday’s scheduled game with Belmont Abbey has been postponed but may be rescheduled.
– L-R hoops recruits
Lenoir-Rhyne’s men’s basketball team signed three players, including 6-foot-7 Clemson transfer Julius Powell, Northern Durham’s 6-8 Jeff Thomas and Northwest Cabarrus point guard Jon Hathcock.
Powell started 11 games at Clemson his freshman year. He has two years of eligibility.
Thomas averaged 15.1 points and 8.1 rebounds.
The 5-11 Hathcock averaged 18.0 points and 5.3 assists and was NPC Player of the Year.
“Jon will provide great depth at the point guard position,” said L-R coach John Lentz. “His ability to shoot and create for others will allow him to fit into our unselfish team play. The one thing we noticed when recruiting Jon was his intense work ethic and that is key for us.”
– Mascot Mania
The Kannapolis Intimidators have put together an All-Star lineup for their Mascot Mania event on Friday.
Along with their own Dub, the Carolina Panthers’ Sir Purr, the Charlotte Bobcats’ Rufus and many others will be on hand.
Gates open at 6:00 p.m, with the first pitch at 7:05.
– Tusculum hire
Michael Robinson has been named Tusculum’s head volleyball coach.
– McKillop at Lowe’s
Davidson basketball coach Bob McKillop and his assistants will serve as Grand Marshals for the May 17 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
