Area briefs: Jarrett commits to Wake Forest

East Rowan senior center fielder Micah Jarrett has committed to Wake Forestís baseball program.
He picked the Demon Deacons over Boston College.
Jarrett, who is tied for the county lead in home runs with six and triples with three, also leads the county with 30 RBIs. He is batting .484 with 10 steals and 21 runs scored.
Jarrett batted .304 with 17 RBIs and 18 steals for the Mustangs as a junior and hit .366 with 49 runs scored for the Rowan Legion team last summer.

– Parks, Mason shine
Sophomores Cadarreus Mason (South Rowan) and K.P. Parks (West Rowan) were position MVPs at the Schumanís National Underclassman Football Combine held in Charlotte on Saturday.
Mason, a linebacker, and Parks, a running back, were among 300 participants from a number of states.
– Prep golf
Salisbury shot 168 and tied West Davidson for third place in a CCC golf match at Corbin Hills on Monday.
Led by medalist Jeff Boyanís 35, Ledford shot 145 to win. Central Davidson shot 164. North Rowan was sixth at 192.
Roy Dixon shot 38 to lead the Hornets. Clint Riddle (42), Randy Almeida (44) and Zack Kirchin (44) were other Salisbury scorers.
Miller Sokolowskiís 44 led the Cavaliers. Kyle Collins (45), Jon Robertson (49) and Dillon Mason (54) followed.
– SAC baseball tournament
Catawbaís Chad Baker, Ryan Query, Matt Kepley, Brett Hatley and Tim Smith were named to the all-tournament team for SAC baseball.
– College track
Bellarmineís Zachary Pittman (North Rowan) finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.13 at the Eastern Kentucky Track and Field Open.
– Carson soccer
Sarah Hayden scored a goal for Carson in a 2-1 NPC loss to West Iredell.
Katie Tobias scored a goal, and keeper Casey Devlin had a strong effort in a 4-1 NPC loss to North Iredell.
– Minor leagues
Pitcher Zach Ward (A.L. Brown) is off to a great start with the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats of the Minnesota Twins organization.
Ward (1-0) hasnít allowed an earned run in seven appearances out of the bullpen. Heís struck out 11 and walked four in 12 innings.
– College baseball
Catawba was voted third behind Tampa and Tusculum in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association South Region Poll.
* Surry Community College edged Wilkes CC 3-2 in a matchup of former South Legion teammates. Rudy Brown (South Rowan) pitched for Surry, while Walker Snow (Carson) threw for Wilkes.
– Prep baseball
Drew Hampton pitched Central Davidson to a 12-3 victory against 4A North Forsyth on Monday. Tanner Rivas homered for the Spartans. Rivas, Trevor Leonard, Landon Clark and Chas Frank had two hits each.
* Zach Burkhart homered and Brandon Smith had four RBIs for West Davidson in a 17-8 loss to Wilkes Central.
* Chad Ferguson had three RBIs to lead East Davidson to a 7-5 victory over Southwestern Randolph.
– Sacred Heart track
Sacred Heart won its first track meet of the spring. It was held at Salisbury High on Saturday.
The Dolphins scored 216 points. Salisbury Academy had 101, and Hickory Christian had 25.
iWe had some truly outstanding times and performances from our kids,î coach Kim Abdalah said.
Abdalah coaches the Dolphins, a third-year program that includes athletes in grades 1-8.

– Pfeiffer softball
Tournament MVP Dacia Ijames led Pfeifferís softball team to a 4-2 victory over Mount Olive in the Carolinas Conference tournament championship game.
Ijames pitched a complete game and hit a solo homer in the sixth. Sarah Moore hit a two-run homer for the Falcons.
