Fairy-tale team
Whatever else happens in this year’s NCAA tournament, Davidson College’s improbable victory over mighty Georgetown will go down as one of the more spectacular upsets in the history of March Madness.
For Davidson’s Wildcats, it was a wild and crazy contest to be sure, as Stephen Curry bounced back after a dismal first half to score 30 points and rally his team from a 17-point deficit. After a 39-year drought of one-and-done performances in the tournament, Davidson has scored double upsets and will take on Wisconsin in the Midwest Region semifinal.
Sunday’s stunning victory has projected Davidson into the national spotlight in a huge way. The small private college just up the road is now one of the tournament’s Cinderella teams. While that’s a sports cliche, it fits Davidson’s ouster of the vaunted Hoyas like a glittering glass slipper.
When it comes to this time of year, it’s not just about the madness. For teams that defy the odds, there’s magic in it, too.
