Salisbury artist Robert Crum recently completed a large mosaic mural in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. The 7-foot by 51-foot mosaic mural (357 square feet) was completed on the first floor of a 19-story high-rise condominium building known as The Ashworth.
Crum studied and apprenticed under master fresco muralist Benjamin F. Long IV, learning the art of completing large murals when assisting Long on four of his North Carolina frescoes. Since that time, Crum has completed a number of mosaic murals in Arizona, Costa Rica and North Carolina, including a 110-foot long mural commmissioned by the City of Salisbury.
Crum spent July, August and September laying out the mosaic tiles in his Salisbury studio. He then spent October and November in North Myrtle Beach installing the mosaic mural on the long wall at The Ashworth.
This new mural was completed using brighly colored smalti (glass) and porcelain tile. The composition and subject matter is underwater sea life found off the coast of the Carolinas, including such beings as porposes, sea stars, sea horses, crabs, a shark and many others.
The title is “Creatures Both Small and Great,” which comes from verse 26 of Psalm 104.
