Boy Scout Troop 36 from First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis went on their 40th annual hike to Camp Barnhardt last Friday and Saturday. In the summer of 1967, Don Efird took his flourishing troop of Boy Scouts to the end of Brantley Road and told them to use their compasses and hike to Camp Barnhardt. The camp is on Badin Lake, about 30 miles cross country.
Each year since then, the boys in Troop 36 (along with another troop occasionally) have made the two-day trek to begin their week of summer camping. The hike is now the stuff of legend in the Central North Carolina Council.
