KANNAPOLIS ó Rose Hill Baptist Church invites everyone to “Service on the Lawn and Food for the Soul.”
This community outreach event will be held Sunday at the Village Park Amphitheater, located at the corner of West C Street and Dale Earnhardt Boulevard.
The service will be conducted on the lawn, beginning at 10 a.m. Bring your lawn chairs and wear your shorts and flip-flops. There will be singing, free food, family fun, games and give-aways to follow, beginning at noon.

Concert in park
KANNAPOLIS ó First Baptist Church continues its annual Concert in the Park series each Sunday night in June.
The free community concerts begin at 6 p.m. in Veterans Park, located beside the church at 101 N. Main St.
On Sunday, the Piedmont Singing Men will perform in concert. This all-male chorus is comprised of 40 singers from 20 different churches in the Concord/Kannapolis area. The program will include a variety of inspirational and patriotic selections.

Children’s day
CLEVELAND ó The Christian Education Department at Third Creek AME Zion Church will celebrate Children’s Day Sunday during the 11 a.m. worship service.
Faith Devenney, Bible teacher at Cleveland, Mount Ulla and Woodleaf elementary schools, will be the guest speaker. She holds degrees in Bible and Bible teaching from Columbia International University in Columbia, S.C., and has taught Bible history in western Rowan County for 10 years.
Lunch will be served following the service.

Drama at Neel Road
Award-winning dramatist Sandra Gregory Wakefield will portray Queen Esther at 7 p.m. Sunday at Neel Road Baptist Church.
An accomplished performer, playwright, counselor and motivational speaker, Wakefield, the daughter of Rudy and Celeste Gregory, was once a resident of Salisbury. This is the second time she has shared one of her “Women of the Bible” monologues with the Neel Road Baptist congregation, previously appearing in the role of Mary, Jesus’ mother
Recognized nationally by such institutions as the Kennedy Center, which nominated her for an Irene Ryan Acting Ward, Sandra has made her mark in civic and cultural circles. She sang at the 1981 wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, has won numerous honors for her contributions to drama, served as assistant director for the Miss Arizona Pageants, wrote for Tucson’s long-running passion play at the TCC Music Hall and volunteered her time as a counselor for the Christian Women’s Job Corps.
Her performance on Sunday night completes a special day in the life of Neel Road Baptist, where the Rev. Neil Westbrook will be installed as pastor on Sunday morning.

New Zion VBS
Vacation Bible School will be held at Salisbury’s New Zion Baptist Church Monday through Friday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. nightly.

Searching cosmos
On June 22, the Sojourners Sunday School Class at St. John’s Lutheran Church will explore the religious, social and philosophical implications of scientific research into the existence of other life in the cosmos.
The class will meet at 7 on that Friday night in The Center at St. John’s, 200 W. Innes St.
Scientist David Friday will speak about “Forty-five Years of SETI ó The Scientific Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.” He presents the decades-long scientific journey of former Cornell University astronomy professor and current director of the SETI Institute’s Center for the Study of Life in the Universe, Frank Drake.This presentation will detail the major serious searches undertaken to explore the galaxy for extraterrestrial life. Included will be a discussion of the famous “Drake Equation” for determining the likelihood that other civilizations exist in the galaxy and the results of this 45-year quest to discover life elsewhere in the cosmos.

VBS at Grace UMC
Grace United Methodist Church invites all children to become Sky Scouts at its upcoming Vacation Bible School.
“Lift Off! Soaring to New Heights with God” begins June 25 and ends June 28. Each night begins with a light supper at 5:45 p.m., and sessions will end at 8 p.m.
This program offers fun, interactive activities that combine the world of hot air ballooning with the discovery of how to reach new heights with God. Each lesson will be supported with Bible stories, science activities, songs, crafts, games and snacks. Parents are invited on the last night for a presentation by the youth.
