George W. Whitley

George William Whitley, 62, Kannapolis, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2007) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 10, 1945, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late Ephriam and Nellie Mecimore Whitley.

A 1963 graduate of South Rowan High School , where he was involved in football, basketball and track, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in business from Shaw University.

He served with the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of sergeant and earning the Purple Heart, Silver Star and other medals.

Later, he worked for several auto body shops and dealerships and retired on disability from B&R Auto Repair, Charlotte. He was a member of Good Guys Auto Club.

Survivors include daughter Gina Lynn Albert, Weston, Conn.; brother Phillip Whitley and sister Linda Newton, both of China Grove; and two grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. today (Feb. 7, 2007), Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Derald Adams, former pastor, South China Grove Baptist Church. Burial, 11 a.m., U.S. National Cemetery, Brenner Avenue, with rites by Rowan Honor Guard.
