Area Sports Briefs: Ohio State's Cathcart wins Akron meet

Ohio State’s Brandon Cathcart (Salisbury) won the triple jump in the gold (invitational) division at the Akron Invitational Indoor Track Meet with an effort of 51 feet, 1/4 inch. It was a provisional qualifying jump for the nationals.

n Appalachian State’s Adrianne´ Alexander (South Rowan) placed eighth in the discus (116-1) and 18th in the shot put (37-13/4) at Akron.

n Men’s college basketball

Avery Patterson (A.L. Brown) scored 10 points and had four rebounds for St. John’s in Sunday’s 73-64 victory over Cincinnati.

n Guilford’s Jordan Snipes hit nine 3-pointers and scored 39 points in Saturday’s 95-70 win over Lynchburg. Snipes’ mother, Cindy, went to West Rowan.

n College women’s golf

Rollins won the Kiawah Island Invitational golf tournament. Pfeiffer shot 656 to finish eighth, 60 shots behind the winners.

n College men’s lacrosse

Pfeiffer has hired Dylan Sheridan as an assistant coach for the men’s lacrosse program.

n College baseball

John McDaniel (Davie County) was the winning pitcher for Pfeiffer in Sunday’s 12-9 decision over Concord. Jody Groce had a three-run double for the Falcons.

Pfeiffer split a doubleheader with Concord (W. Va.) on Saturday. The Falcons lost 3-2, then won 1-0 behind the pitching of Zach Strickland.

n Brandon Cranfield (West Rowan) and Tommy Small (East Rowan) are listed on Pfeiffer’s jayvee roster.

n Aaron Lynch (A.L. Brown) is playing at Montreat. Daniel Smith (A.L. Brown) has been in Lenoir-Rhyne’s lineup at first base.

n Former Salisbury High lefties Lee Dupre (Catawba) and Phillip Hilliard (Wingate) were on the mound at the finish of Catawba’s 14-8 win over the Bulldogs on Friday. Dupre struck out four in 12/3 innings.

Hilliard has pitched two 1-2-3 innings for the Bulldogs.

n Isenhour boosts earnings

Salisbury native Tripp Isenhour earned $11,820 for shooting 71-69-73-73 — 286 in the FBR Open, a PGA Tour stop in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Isenhour also earned 49 FedEx Cup points.

n China Grove baseball

China Grove Youth Baseball League and Cal Ripken Baseball League sign-ups are at Dale’s Sporting Goods.

Registration fee is $50 for Coach-Pitch, Junior Division, and Senior Division.

Registration will continue until Feb. 24. After Feb 24, late registration fee is $60. Call 704-857-1439 for information.

n Little League sign-ups

Franklin-Ellis sign-ups are at KidSports through Feb. 10. The fee is $50.

n Rowan is accepting sign-ups at Godley’s Garden Center. Cost is $40 for Coach Pitch and T-ball (ages 5-8). Cost is $60 for ages 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14. League age is as of April 30, 2007. Contact Jeff Bernhardt at 704-855-9849.

n Spencer will register for spring baseball and softball programs on Friday, Feb. 9, from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Eighth Street Ballpark.
