Three enter NSA Carolina's Hall

Local couple Cecil & Nan Whitley and their daughter, Adrian Whitley Gantt, were inducted into the The National Softfball Association Carolina’s Hall of Fame in ceremonies held at Myrtle Beach, S.C., over the weekend.

Nan Whitley is Catawba’s longtime head softball coach and served as field hockey coach from 1982-2000.

This isn’t the Pennsylvania native’s first Hall of Fame induction. She was the first woman inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. She graduated from Catawba in 1974 after starring in softball and field hockey.

Adrian Gantt is Catawba’s head field hockey coach and a softball assistant coach. The East Rowan graduate was an All-America field hockey player and All-SAC softball player at Catawba, graduating in 1998. Her husband is Catawba baseball coach Jim Gantt.

Cecil Whitley was inducted in the meritorious service category. He was instrumental in getting NSA’s many youth programs started.

* Salisbury Academy hoops

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls defeated North Hills 19-15. The Jaguars (5-3) were led by Alexandra Drye’s offense and Sally Fowler’s defense.

* Sacred Heart basketball

James Kyger hit three 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team to a 77-29 victory over High Point Wesleyan.

Sacred Heart (23-5) got 17 points from Roy Dixon. Phil Tonseth had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Colin Sullivan and Jack Young had 10 points each.

Brian Bauk had eight points, six steals and five assists. Kevin Robinson had 10 rebounds.

* Rockwell Christian hoops

Rockwell Christian’s varsity boys basketball team defeated Calvary King 51-36. Taylor Honeycutt scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds. Lyle Branch scored 13 points.

Rockwell lost 78-68 to Fayetteville Street Christian. Honeycutt had 29 points and nine rebounds. Branch and Jordan Blankenship had 13 points each.

* Rockwell’s jayvee boys (15-1) defeated Calvary 27-15 to win the regular-season conference championship. Josh Cummings had seven points and 10 rebounds.

Rockwell’s jayvees downed Fayetteville 47-24. Ben Peterson scored 12 and Nathan Funderburk 10 to lead the Chargers.

* Ashlee Miller had 10 points to lead Rockwell’s jayvee girls to a 16-15 victory over Calvary.

Miller scored 12 points in Rockwell’s 29-22 loss to Fayetteville.

* North Hills basketball

The North Hills varsity boys basketball team lost to Sheets Memorial 68-59. Josh Richardson (16 points), Ethan Marsh (15) and Wade Butner (14) led the Eagles.

North Hills also lost 70-51 to Covenant Classical. Robert Powell led the Eagles with 14 points. Richardson had 11 points. Marsh scored 10.

* The North Hills varsity girls lost to Sheets 49-27. Skarlett Ross scored 11 points for the Eagles, and Christina Gobble had 10.

Johanna Tansey led the Eagles with eight points in a 57-18 loss to Covenant.

* The North Hills Middle boys defeated Clearview. Tripp Caldwell scored 22 for the Eagles (11-4). Cole Honeycutt had 14, and Sam Humble eight.

* The North Hills Middle girls won against Clearview. Savannah Daniel scored eight points for the Eagles (10-4).

* West sweeps Southeast

West Rowan Middle’s seventh-grade basketball teams won a doubleheader against Southeast to improve to 2-0.

Jordan Kimber and Keshun Sherrill scored 16 points apiece for the Bulldog boys in a 63-13 romp. Kimber also had seven assists, and Damon Hambright pulled down 11 rebounds.

Louis Kraft and Andy Austin scored five points each to lead Southeast (0-2) and combined for 16 rebounds.

* Amber Holloway’s 12 points and eight steals paced the West girls to a 33-27 victory over the Patriots. Brittany Barber had eight rebounds.

Chloe Monroe had 13 points and seven steals for the Patriots (0-2). Sarrah Holman scored seven points.

* Franklin-Ellis sign-ups

Franklin-Ellis Little League sign-ups are at KidSports through Feb. 10. The fee is $50.

* South Y basketball

South Rowan Y is accepting registration for its basketball program for boys in grades 9-12 through Feb. 3.

The fee is $35 for members and $59 for non-members. Call Gary Earnhardt at 704-857-7011.

Would you please announce that the Salisbury Parks and Recreation and Rowan Little League have partnered and will offer Little League sanctioned girls fast pitch softball for ages 8-14 and coach pitch for ages 5-7. Also announce that the Rowan County Youth Wrestling Club is still taking registrations for all 7th-8th graders interested in wrestling AAU. No try out is needed. All wrestlers are welcome. Wrestlers can register at the West Rowan High School wrestling room Monday, February 5th at 7:00 and be ready to practice at this time. Registration cost: $12.00 for AAU card. South Rowan YMCA Boys High School Basketball

Last week to register:

South Rowan YMCA is accepting registrations through this Saturday, February 3rd for its High School Basketball League.

League is for 9th-12th grade boys. Practice starts mid February and games begin after local high school season is over.
