NEW YORK — Barry Bonds gave the San Francisco Giants the right to terminate his $15.8 million, one-year contract if he is indicted.

The unusual provision could set off a legal test between the individual player contract and the union’s collective bargaining agreement. The language, included in the deal that was completed Monday night, is designed by the team to protect itself in case Bonds is charged in the federal government’s steroids investigation.

Bonds’ personal trainer, Greg Anderson, is in a California federal prison because he has refused to testify whether Bonds committed perjury when he told a 2003 grand jury he never knowingly used performance-enhancing drugs.

As part of the agreement, if Bonds is indicted the Giants have the right to terminate it under two sections of the Uniform Player Contract, a baseball executive said Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce that detail.

BASEBALL NOTES

ARLINGTON, Texas — Sammy Sosa is back in baseball — and back to fielding the same steroids questions that dogged him when he left the game more than a year ago.

Sosa and the Texas Rangers agreed to a minor league contract Tuesday, giving the former slugger his first crack at the major leagues since the 2005 season with Baltimore, when he hit .221 with 14 home runs in 102 games.

* BEIJING — The New York Yankees agreed to send coaches, scouts and trainers to China to help boost interest in baseball, furthering a push by the major leagues into one of the world’s fastest-growing sports markets.

Under the agreement, the government-backed Chinese Baseball Association will send staff to the Yankees’ facilities in New York and Tampa, Fla., while Yankees personnel will assist the Chinese national team and others.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Venus Williams will play in the Fed Cup against Belgium.

U.S. Fed Cup captain Zina Garrison said that Williams, who missed the Australian Open with a left wrist injury, has committed to play in the first round on April 21-22 at the Delray Beach Stadium & Tennis Center.

* DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Top-seeded James Blake cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow American Robert Kendrick on Tuesday night at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.Blake jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and a 5-1 lead in the second set, facing little resistance from the 87th-ranked Kendrick.

MAYO DECISION

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Suspended prep star O.J. Mayo won a temporary restraining order Tuesday that allowed him to play that night against another nationally ranked opponent.

Cabell County Circuit Judge Dan O’Hanlon granted separate requests by Mayo and five other Huntington players who were suspended for two games stemming from techincal fouls in a game against Capital last Friday.

The rulings allowed Mayo and his teammates to play Tuesday night in Durham, against Artesia of Lakewood, Calif. Mayo scored 19 points before fouling out with 2:38 remaining in Huntington’s 73-66 win over Artesia at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Mayo received two technical fouls and was ejected, then he followed referee Mike Lazo to the scorer’s table and apparently bumped the referee from behind.

BOXING

LOS ANGELES — Suddenly eager to avoid the feuding Mayweather family, Oscar De La Hoya has chosen Freddie Roach as his trainer for a May 5 super welterweight title fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Mayweather Sr., who has trained De La Hoya since late 2000, turned down an offer to be in the boxer’s corner against his estranged son.

De La Hoya confirmed Tuesday that he offered Mayweather Sr. a $500,000 guarantee and $500,000 if he wins. Mayweather Sr. called it insulting, and demanded $2 million.

Tickets for the fight at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas sold out in three hours last weekend.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

GREENVILLE, S.C. — A trip to Clemson and five home games highlight Furman’s 2007 football schedule.The Paladins will play the Tigers on Sept. 15 at Death Valley. The teams last met in 2003, with Clemson winning 28-17.

Furman went 8-4 in 2006.
