Letter: Reader feels abused by trial coverage

Absolute amazement is what I feel as I read day after day the detailed accounts of this Helms/Mendiola trial! Where is the wisdom? It was bad enough to realize this was going on when our child attended this school, but to have the details of all these things plastered all over the front pages of our community newspaper leaves one feeling abused.

I do not wish to stop the Post. I like reading the news and what is happening around us locally and nationally. We have always taught our children the importance of being informed.

However, there are things that should be handled appropriately. That is why we have laws and lawyers and judges and juries. These are the ones who “must” hear these things and decide what is right and just.

Our children are now attending the local high school and they are now being bombarded with these awful details that none of us will be better for hearing.

These issues should be decided by the proper authorities and not the general public, let alone our sons and daughters in their years of puberty and growth. These things are not the norm nor is it right for us to hear their perversions. Please use a little wisdom and cover these issues with more appropriateness, dignity and objectivity.

Should there be an article about this? Yes. Should we know this trial is happening? Yes. But we do not need the “he said” and “she said” drama posted all over the front page of our newspaper! Webster’s dictionary declares that wisdom is the “insightful understanding of what is true, right or enduring.”

Knowing that a bomb has exploded is one thing, but actually telling others how to build one is another thing entirely. Wisdom has been ignored in these articles!
