Letter: Changes at Wal-Mart

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, January 30, 2007

Recently, I learned that our local Wal-Mart plans to close out its notions and piecegoods department because it isn’t turning a good profit.

Before Wal-Mart came to town, we had numerous sources for those of us who sew, mend, etc. Sad to me, all of these places fell by the wayside, and everyone had to go to Wal-Mart. We had no choice.

Now, I don’t do a great deal of sewing these days, but I do mend and alter. All my supplies come from Wal-Mart.

In the future, if I can’t buy a spool of thread, button or some other notion at our local Wal-Mart, I’ll just take all — and I mean all — my business out of town!

Call 1-800-WAL-MART (there are numerous cycles, but stick with it) and voice your concerns.

Editor’s note: According to Wal-Mart spokesman Dan Fogleman, Wal-Mart isn’t phasing out merchandise currently carried in the notions and piecegoods department, but it will become part of a new “crafts and celebrations” center that will be introduced at some Wal-Mart stores around the country. The crafts and celebrations center will combine merchandise previously included in the notions and piecegoods section with items used in crafts, party planning and holiday events.
