Lee remembered

On the anniversary of his 200th birthday, the Robert F. Hoke Chapter No. 78 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy paid special remembrance to General Robert E. Lee at its annual Lee-Jackson-Maury Luncheon on Jan. 19. The event, which dates back to 1992, was held in Stanback Auditorium of the Rowan Public Library with 60 UDC members and guests in attendance.

In addition to Salisbury, chapters from Greensboro, Jacksonville, Charlotte, Concord, Albemarle, Mooresville, Asheville, Lexington, Durham, Roanoke Rapids, Aberdeen, Winston-Salem and Akron, Ohio were represented.

Hoke chapter president Sue Curtis welcomed the assembly to Salisbury. Trudy Hall, chapter third vice-president, recognized guests that included Ruthann Bond, UDC North Carolina division president. Grady Hall, member of the Gov. Ellis Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, read the poem, “Birthdays of Lee and Jackson,” and Hoke member Chris Hilton blessed the meal with a prayer written by Commodore Matthew Fountaine Maury.

Ed Curtis, honorary associate member of the Hoke chapter, introduced the speaker, Dr. Dane Hartgrove, who retired from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., after a 30-year career.

The luncheon concluded with the singing of “Blessed Be the Tie That Binds.”

Rodeo participant

Leaders of the National High School Rodeo Association appointed Ainsley Alessandrini of Cleveland to the Wrangler High School All Star Rodeo Team, the first-ever corporate-sponsored youth rodeo team. She earned a position on the team based on leadership qualities, academic eligibility and athletic achievements.

Members of the team receive official competition apparel consisting of Wrangler Twenty X shirts embroidered with the team logo and two pairs of competition jeans. In addition, team members receive an official team certificate signed by rodeo greats Jim Shoulders and Ty Murray.

Ainsley is a sophomore at West Rowan High School. She is the daughter of Michell Christie-Alessandrini of Cleveland and Raymond Alessandrini of Salisbury.

Red Hats

The Classy Red Hats met at D.J.’s Restaurant Jan. 12 for lunch and fellowship. Sara Owen is queen mother.

The Chapeaux Rouge Divas met Jan. 9 at Lexington’s King House, where they enjoyed a Chinese buffet.
