WINSTON-SALEM — The city of Winston-Salem says it will spend $29 million over the next 25 years to help developers build a downtown baseball park and boost redevelopment.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the incentive package, its largest so far.

Developers said they will ask Forsyth County for help before moving ahead.

“In my opinion, successful cities of the future must be those that are willing to take bold but rational steps to ensure that we can attract and retain … young people and be able move our economy from an old manufacturing base to a knowledge-based economy,” said Mayor Allen Joines.

Billy Prim and Andrew Filiposwki own the Winston-Salem Warthogs baseball team that would play in the downtown park. Prim has said the new ballpark can’t be built without help from the county.

Prim said he may lower his $14 million request to the county. County officials also have questioned the public benefit of a downtown ballpark.

The ballpark is envisioned as part of a $189 million development project.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Brian Campbell and Maxim Afinogenov scored 4 minutes apart in the third period, lifting the Buffalo Sabres to a 6-3 win over the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night.

The loss spoiled a breakout game for Bruins rookie Phil Kessel, who enjoyed the first two-goal game of his career, in only his fifth game back since having surgery for testicular cancer.

Daniel Paille scored twice, including an empty-netter in the final minute, to help the Sabres snap a season-worst three-game winless streak (0-2-1). Thomas Vanek and Derek Roy also scored for Buffalo.

Glen Murray also scored for the Bruins, who dropped to 2-6-1 in the last nine games.

Red Wings 5, Predators 3

DETROIT — Henrik Zetterberg had a two goals and an assist, and Pavel Datsyuk added four assists to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Wednesday night.

Nicklas Lidstrom, Jiri Hudler and Tomas Holmstrom also scored for Detroit, which won its fifth straight.

Datsyuk has 14 points — two goals and 12 assists — in his last five games, Zetterberg has three goals and nine assists while scoring at least a point in six straight games, and Holmstrom has nine goals in his last 10 games.

DALLAS — All-Star goalie Marty Turco matched a franchise record with his 160th victory, stopping 18 shots and assisting on a goal as the Dallas Stars beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 on Wednesday night.Turco has spent all six of his NHL seasons in Dallas. He began as a backup for two seasons to Ed Belfour, the Stanley Cup-winning goalie for the Stars who won 160 games from 1997-2002.

NEW YORK — The Women’s Basketball Officiating Consortium ruled Wednesday that the game officials made a series of mistakes that led to them to count the game-winning basket in South Dakota State’s victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

DRUGS

PHOENIX — Baseball owners appear to have little interest in pursuing stricter penalties for amphetamines use — even after Barry Bonds reportedly failed a drug test last year.

Baseball banned amphetamines for the first time starting last season. A player is not identified until after failing two amphetamines tests, which also results in a 25-game suspension. The first failed steroids test, by comparison, is a 50-game suspension.

MADRID, Spain — David Beckham may play again for Real Madrid after all.

Coach Fabio Capello suggested Wednesday he may review his decision to stop Beckham from playing for the team following the former England captain’s decision to join the Los Angeles Galaxy.
