Junior golfers compete

Three local junior golfers competed in an Eastern Junior Golf Tour event over the weekend.

At Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, the site of the 2007 U.S. Women’s Championship, Alex Lee finished seventh in the boys 12-13 division with an 83-86. In the girls 12-18 division, Allison Lee finished seventh with 79-78, and Lauren Smith finished ninth with 80-81.

Pfeiffer men win

No. 13 Pfeiffer defeated Lees-McRae 110-98 on Monday to improve to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the CVAC.

Five Falcons scored in double figures, led by Logan Call’s 20 points.

* The Pfeiffer women won 83-65. Tamara Clay scored 25 points for the Falcons (11-3, 6-1), and Lauren Brittingham scored 22.

Catawba baseball third

Catawba’s baseball team is ranked third in the South Region Preseason Poll.

Defending national champion Tampa is ranked No. 1.

Tusculum is ranked fifth.

Stinson honored by CIAA

Livingstone men’s basketball coach James Stinson was honored as CIAA Coach of the Week after the Blue Bears upset Elizabeth City State on Saturday.

Area athlete update

Donte Minter (West Rowan) scored 22 points on 10-for-12 shooting and blocked a career-high six shots in Appalachian State’s 100-91 victory against Western Carolina on Monday. Minter added four rebounds and two assists.

The Mountaineers (13-4, 5-1) broke a first-place tie in the North Division of the Southern Conference standings with Western (7-10, 4-2). They had 28 assists on 34 baskets and shot 64.2 percent.

* Phillip Williams (West) had 11 points and seven rebounds in Winthrop’s 61-42 victory against UNC Asheville on Monday. Williams hit two 3-pointers in the first half, when he scored 10 points.

* Ashley Watkins (Salisbury) had 10 points and four rebounds in Queens’

78-59 loss to Barton on Monday.
