The Writers’ Workshop is sponsoring classes on Saturdays, 12:30-5:30 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center, 5009 Providence Road, in Charlotte. Each class is $75, or $70 for members.

Jan. 27: Writing Your Memoirs with Karen Ackerson. The class will receive information on writing memoirs — collecting data, creating a timeline and focusing on personal epiphanies. Turning memoirs into fiction will also be discussed. Five pages will be reviewed in class by Ackerson, who has edited and revised memoirs with The Renbourne Agency for 17 years.

Feb. 3: Fiction Writing with Kristine Madera. This workshop will explore the elements of fiction writing, such as plot and character development, creating tension and resolution. Students may bring a one-page story idea or synopsis to the class for discussion. Madera studied at the Maui Writer’s Retreat and has written two novels. She has also facilitated intensive writing and editing groups for several years.

Feb. 10: Introduction to Business Writing with Terrence Murray. The basics of effective business writing will be taught, including letters, proposals, memos, press releases, business plans and marketing copy. The class will learn how to create concise structure, persuasive language and self-editing techniques. Murray has executed strategic business plans for Fortune 1000 and start-up companies, and has trained more than 400 business, service and creative professionals.

Feb. 17: The Journal As Wellspring with Veronica Fisher. Writers of any genre will learn how to transform personal experiences into a journal. Class discussion and writing exercises will focus on the creative process and overcoming obstacles to writing. Fisher has incorporated journal-writing techniques in her 15 years’ practice as psychotherapist, and will use Life’s Companion by Christina Baldwin as a source book.

March 3: Screenwriting Workshop with Nathan Ross Freeman. Aspiring scriptwriters will learn elements of the screenplay such as format, characterization, dialogue, theme, conflict and resolution. Three pages of work or a synopsis may be brought to the class for review. Freeman teaches writing at UNC-Charlotte. His screenplays include “Mr. Bones,” “Hannah Elias,” “Geist” and “GEM.”

March 10: The Heart of a Poem with Dannye Romine Powell. Poets will learn techniques for shaping and revising their work, and may bring three poems to the class for evaluation. Powell is the award-winning author of “Parting the Curtains,” “The Ecstasy of Regret” and “At Every Wedding Someone Stays Home.” Her poems appear in such journals as the Paris Review, Prairie Schooner and the Georgia Review.
