Lake Norman’s basketball teams swept an NPC doubleheader at Carson on Wednesday.

Carson’s girls lost 58-28, while the Wildcat boys claimed a 75-56 victory.

Carson’s girls were in the game after a quarter, trailing 10-6, but the veteran Wildcats rolled up 26 unanswered points in the second quarter to take command of the game.

“We didn’t get a whole lot of looks the first quarter, but we had a good defensive quarter, and everyone felt good about it,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said. “But the second quarter, they put a lot of pressure on us and turned it into a turnover-fest.”

Coach Dave Walla’s Wildcats are usually one of the better teams in the NPC, so the Cougars just had to chalk this one up to experience.

“They are tough,” Misenheimer said. “They don’t do anything spectacular, but they do all the little things. They are just fundamentally sound and shoot very well.”

Mackenzie White scored 13 points for the Cougars. Sarah Marshall and Bronwynne Curtindale managed four apiece.

Charlena Lynn didn’t score but led the rebounding for the Cougars.

Meghan Abernathy led the Wildcats with 14 points. Lauren Marshall scored 11.

* Prep basketball roundup C.J. Harris scored 25 points to lead Mount Tabor’s boys to a 88-79 CPC win over West Forsyth.

Travaughn Long had a huge night for the Titans with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

* Rene Rector scored 21 points as CPC front-runner Mount Tabor handled West Forsyth 63-46 in the girls game.

Tall Elizabeth Maas scored 12 points to lead the Titans.

* East Davidson, ranked No. 1 in 2A girls in the NCPreps.com media poll, improved to 15-0 by pounding Southern Guilford 61-28 on Wednesday.

Anna Dellapenta and Anna Freeman combined for 28 points.

* Thomasville’s Megan Tate scored 25 points in a 91-38 rout of Lexington’s winless girls.

* Livingstone women win

Livingstone’s women’s basketball team got the new year off to a good start with a 57-50 victory over Bluefield State (W. Va.) at New Trent Gym.

Livingstone (3-6) made seven of its eight free-throw attempts in the final 3:49 to secure the win.

Livingstone led 25-19 at halftime.

LaTanya Walker led the Blue Bears with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. Lina Brown chipped in with 10 points.

Hyshea Branche paced Bluefield State (3-5 overall) with 13 points.

Livingstone travels to Division I opponent Winston-Salem State on Saturday.

* Pfeiffer men get victory

Pfeiffer earned a tougher than anticipated 119-111 men’s basketball victory at winless Columbia Union (D.C.) on Wednesday.

DeMario Grier continued his tear with 29 points to lead the 11th-ranked Falcons (9-1). Logan Call had 28 points and five rebounds.

Pfeiffer forced 31 turnovers, including 21 steals.

Pfeiffer led by as many as 18 points in the first half but settled for a 59-59 halftime deadlock.

The Falcons scored the first eight points of the second half to take the lead for good and made 12 of 14 free-throw attempts down the stretch to hold on.

Tavares Cooper (19 points), Thomas Carr (14) and Robert McGriff (12) also scored in double figures for the Falcons.

Pfeiffer plays CVAC rival Barton on Monday in Wilson.

* Wachovia Cup standings

Ledford holds the top spot in the CCC in the Wachovia Cup standings for overall athletic excellence with 52 points. Salisbury is second with 51.5 points.

West Davidson is third. North Rowan is fifth.

Mount Tabor leads the CPC standings. Davie County is fourth, South Rowan is fifth, and East Rowan is sixth.

Mooresville holds the No. 1 spot in the NPC. Northwest Cabarrus is fourth, West Rowan is sixth, and Carson is eighth.

Concord leads the SPC standings. A.L. Brown is in fourth place.

* Southeast tops Dolphins

Southeast’s boys basketball team defeated Sacred Heart 56-45.

Southeast got 18 points from Xavier Parks and 13 apiece from Gunnar Hogan and Dylan Eagle.

Jack Young led the Dolphins (13-5) with 13 points. Roy Dixon had 11 points. Colin Sullivan had eight points and eight rebounds.

* College basketball roundup

Georgia State’s Wesley Turner (West Rowan) has been sidelined with a broken nose.

* Guilford’s women routed Hollins 93-34 on Wednesday. Tracey Croner (East Rowan) scored 14 points for the Quakers on 7-for-13 shooting.

* Spangler update

Former Presbyterian football coach Tommy Spangler resigned to take the defensive coordinator position on the staff at Louisiana Tech.

* Comet boosters

The next North Stanly Booster Club meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. in the media center.

* GARS event

Fifty-four GARS members participated in a captain’s choice event at Crescent Golf Club.

Clive Mahaffey, Chuck Leslie, Lee Bryant and Gordon Correll shot 64 (8-under).

Tony LaBarbera, Ralph Luther and Bobby Clark shot 66 for second place.

Art Hattaway, Harold Hattaway, Tommy Austin and Ted Bayliff shot 68 for third place.

Lee Ketner was closest to the pin on No. 8. Correll was closest on No. 10.

Vohn Peeler made the longest putt on No. 18.

* Catawba softball camp

Catawba’s softball program will hold a Spring Training Day fundraiser on Jan. 15, Martin Luther King Day, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Activities will take place in the lower level of Goodman Gym.
