Area briefs: Catawba baseball ranked 28th

Catawba is ranked 28th in the preseason Collegiate Baseball Division II poll.

SAC rival Tusculum is 25th. Tampa is ranked No. 1.

n Ellington honored

Catawba defensive lineman Ron Ellington was honorable mention on the d2football.com All-America team.

n Erwin sweeps

Erwin’s eighth-grade girls basketball team defeated North Rowan Middle 40-19.

Lindsey Dunlap had eight points and five steals to lead Erwin (8-4, 7-3). Taylor Honeycutt had six steals, and Mallory Drew contributed five assists.

LaShonda Chalk led the Mavs (4-8, 3-7) with eight points.

n Dakota Tilley scored 15 points to lead Erwin’s boys to a 33-20 victory over North.

Jamey Blalock had eight rebounds for the Eagles (2-10, 2-8). Will Sapp had six points.

Javon Hargrave had eight points for North (1-11, 1-9).

n NHMS sweeps

The North Hills Middle boys basketball team team defeated Covenant Classical 50-21.

Jonah Marsh led the Eagles (8-3) with 12 points. Cole Honeycutt scored 11. Andrew Parks had eight points and Tripp Caldwell scored seven.

n The North Hills Middle girls defeated Covenant Classical. No scored was reported.

Margaret Kaufmann led the Eagles (7-3) with 12 points. Laura Butner and Cacy Honeycutt had six points each.

n Sacred Heart wins

James Kyger hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points to lead Sacred Heart’s boys basketball team to a 55-43 win over First Assembly of Winston-Salem.

Phil Tonseth (14 points), Roy Dixon (12 points), Jack Young (eight points) and Colin Sullivan (10 boards) were the other leaders (17-5).

n Wrestling results

Erwin beat North Rowan Middle 64-25, China Grove topped Knox 65-35 and Corriher-Lipe beat Southeast 50-36 in Thursday’s matches. Erwin and China Grove have one loss each and will meet at Erwin on Thursday for the league title.

n Rowan Tarheels

The Rowan Tarheels 11-under USSSA-AAU baseball team is looking for players.

Players can’t turn 12 before May 1.

n Cranford honored

Appalachian State’s Nathan Cranford (Central Cabarrus) was named Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week and SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week after he broke a school record with 10 3-pointers in a victory over Chattanooga.

Cranford is currently pursuing his MBA and is a three-time member of the SoCon Academic All-Conference team.
