LEXINGTON — Throughout January, the art of elementary and middle school students from across Davidson County will be featured in an exhibition at Arts United in Lexington.

Exhibit entries are selected by each school’s art teacher and each artist receives a certificate. In addition, art work will be judged by retired Davidson County art teachers, Donna Caulder and Janice Hooks. They will award several “Awesome Artists” with special award ribbons in the elementary grades and award ribbons to middle school students who place first, second and third in sixth, seventh and eighth grade.

Arts United is located at 220 S.Main St. (the old Post Office) in Lexington. Hours are: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays.

Prime Time Band

KANNAPOLIS — Rehearsals begin tonight for the new season of Piedmont Prime Time Community Band. Rehearsals are 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

Anyone with prior experience playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument is invited. No audition is required to join. The volunteer group is intended for adult players, but students are accepted with special consideration.

Roller Mill

CHINA GROVE — The China Grove Roller Mill and Museum will be open to the public 2-4 p.m. Sunday. The mill is located at 308 N. Main St., China Grove.

Music will be provided by Jeff Whittington. Light refreshments will be served.

Admission is free, although donations are welcome.

Met auditions

CHARLOTTE — Aspiring young opera singers will compete in the 2007 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions-North Carolina district this Saturday in Dana Auditorium at Queens University, Charlotte, beginning at 11 a.m.

The 37 singers will be competing for the opportunity to advance to the Metropolitan Opera National Council Southeast Regional auditions in Atlanta on Feb. 18, and ultimately the finals at the Metropolitan Opera in New York on April 1.

The public is invited to attend Saturday’s auditions at no cost, but a nominal donation of $3 is suggested.

Monet sold out

RALEIGH — All tickets have sold out for the Monet in Normandy exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art.

There are no tickets available for the remainder of the exhibition, which closes Jan. 14. As of Jan. 4, 175,472 people had visited the exhibition.

Youth Theatre

Piedmont Players will hold youth auditions for “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” 4 p.m. Jan. 15-16 on the third floor of the Meroney Theater, 213 S. Main Street.

Public performances of this Robertson Family Foundation youth theatre production will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23-24. There will also performances for local school students during the day Feb. 21-23. Actors will be permitted to miss school as an excused absence. Rehearsals typically run 4-6 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Auditions are open to students grades 3-12. Auditions will be cold readings from the script.

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir Inc. of Salisbury will resume rehearsals for the remainder of the 2006-07 season at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Rehearsals take place in the choir room of First United Methodist Church at the corner of South Church and West Fisher streets in downtown Salisbury.

DCCC art exhibit

LEXINGTON — Internationally known glass sculptor Jon Kuhn of Winston-Salem will lead a field of 12 North Carolina artists sharing their “Perspectives” during the 2007 Spring Art Exhibit at Davidson County Community College. The show opens Tuesday, Jan. 16, with a reception from 4-6 p.m. in the Mendenhall Building on the Davidson Campus.

Also featured in the show are Leslie Frontz and Harold Frontz, both of Lexington, and Phyllis Steimel of Salisbury. They are members of a plein air group of painters.

Oil painter Steimel uses expressive brushstrokes and vivid use of color to interpret landscapes and architecture. Leslie Frontz paints in the British style of watercolor. Her work is representational, using strong awareness of color and design where shapes and colors carry the subject.

Harold Frontz, an impressionist watercolor painter, uses bright hues to convey temperature, intensity and value. His marine paintings showcase his dexterity in use of brush and paint.

“Perspectives” remains open through May 18. The reception and exhibit are open to the public.

Gypsy dance

CHARLOTTE — UNC Charlotte’s Department of Music will present “Gypsy Show,” Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. in Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. The performance is directed and choreographed by 2006-07 artist in residence, Vadim Kolpakov.

Highlighting Gypsy dances from Russia, Hungary, Moldova and Spain, the pieces will include Gypsy melodies, lyrical pieces and instrumental music for the Russian 7-string guitar, accordion and other instruments. Performers include faculty and students from the Music, Dance and Theatre Departments as well as guest musicians and dancers from around the Charlotte area.

Kolpakov is recognized as one of the most prominent and renowned Russian Gypsy 7-string guitarists in the world. Formerly with the Moscow Roma (Gypsy) Theatre, Romen, Kolpakov is an accomplished composer, vocalist, dancer and actor. He has recorded several CDs and performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the New York GypsyFest and Harvard University.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Art docent training

Waterworks Visual Arts Center invites you to join their docent team and take part in a series of docent training sessions.

This training will consist of four one-hour sessions starting the first of February, and will explore contemporary art history.

Jim Haymaker, former Art Department chair of Pfeiffer College will be leading all four discussions. The training is free and open to anyone who wishes to join the Waterworks docent team. Docents need not be former educators or artists. Those with an appreciation for art and who with to contribute to their community though volunteering make good candidates.

Training sessions will be noon-1 p.m.Thursdays, Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22, at Waterworks Visual Arts Center, 123 E. Liberty St.
