SOUTHERN PINES – William Chambers “Bill” Coughenour Jr., 89, of Southern Pines and Salisbury, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at Fox Hollow in Southern Pines.

Mr. Coughenour was born July 18, 1917, in Salisbury to the late William Chambers Coughenour Sr. and Ruby Rollins Gray Coughenour. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Chambers Coughenour.

Bill practiced law in Salisbury for more than 50 years and served as a naval officer in the South Pacific during World War II as the captain of a “sub-chaser.” He also served in many community and political capacities in Salisbury, including positions at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on the Vestry and as Senior Warden.

Mr. Coughenour made many significant contributions to community groups and activities established substantial endowments for the ARC of Moore County and the Prancing Horse. He was also responsible for the renovation of a building at the Hyde school in Woodstock, Conn., and establishing a tennis scholarship at Catawba College in Salisbury.

In 2006, Mr. Coughenour made a major gift to the fund drive for the Moore County Coalition for Human Care. Both the Children’s Center fund-raising program and his Alma Mater at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill benefited from his generosity as well.

Mr. Coughenour is survived by his daughter, Kelly Coughenour McCrann; son-in-law Michael Jonathan McCrann; stepdaughter Doris Price Deal and husband R.L. “Buddy” Deal of High Point; grandchildren M. Jonathan McCrann Jr., Kelly Coughenour McCrann and Josephine Brannon McCrann II; step-grandchildren Elizabeth Elvington Hurley and Anna Holmes Hurley; and sisters Mrs. Anne C. Boyd and Mrs. Nancy C. Nichols of Salisbury.

Service: 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Whayne Hougland Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Chestnut Hills Cemetery.

Visitation: A reception will be held following the burial at the home of Mrs. Anne Boyd at 129 E. Ellis St.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to any of the above programs.
