Looking back: Barn-warming

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, January 2, 2007

Cannon High School staff members and Kannapolis itself planned various activities and events for the seniors who would be graduating in the spring, and the annual barn-warming was one of them.

It was also featured in the school’s 1937 annual, known as the Cannon Report, and the barn-warming pictured here was one of those.

This was one of the most enjoyed social events of the year. It took place in the gymnasium, and everyone was dressed in rural garb, which produced a “most picturesque scene,” the report said.

Mable Simmons and A. L. Poston won prizes for being the best dressed boy and girl.

Music director Womble and his young orchestra furnished music definitely of the “barn” type, and this particular scene shows a part of an impromptu wedding that was part of the program.
