South Rowan’s Jake Hill, North Rowan’s Zach Poole, East Rowan’s Josh Patch and Salisbury’s Gordon Witte won championships in the Tiger Invitational wrestling tournament held at Mount Pleasant on Friday and Saturday.

Hill won a 4-2 overtime decision over Piedmont’s Patrick Nelms in the 112-pound division.

Poole decisioned Northwest Cabarrus’ Alex Skonieczny 3-2 in the 189-pound class.

Patch, 215, pinned West’s Stanly’s Austin Harris, and Witte pinned Weddington’s Josh Campbell in a 275-pound matchup.

South wrestlers Chris Kiser (135), Nick Haigler (140) and Jon Iannone (145) lost in the finals of the 22-team event.

Third-place finishers included Carson’s Philip Tilley (125), Salisbury’s Tyler Jeffries (135) and East’s Chris Demitraszek (275).

Fourth-place finishers included South’s Jake Freeman (103) and East’s Aaron Plyler (119), Joe Knox (125) and Thomas Lowe (171).

South Rowan placed third in team scoring with 128 points, and East Rowan was fourth with 123.

Northwest Cabarrus (67) tied for 11th. Salisbury (60.5) was 14th, North Rowan (42.5) was 16th and Carson (30) was 18th.

Mount Pleasant and Weddington tied for the team title with 151.5 points each.

Central Cabarrus’ Daniel Camacho, a 119-pounder, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler.

* Prep basketball

East Davidson’s girls stayed undefeated with a

49-20 victory over Ledford in the finals of the Lexington State Bank tournament. Anna Freeman scored 16 to lead the Golden Eagles (13-0).

* North Davidson defeated Lexington 56-51 in the boys championship game.

* Concord’s top-seeded boys won the championship of the NorthEast Medical Holiday Prep Classic, beating Central Cabarrus 74-58 in the final at Cabarrus Arena on Friday.

Dee Bost scored 18 points, and MVP Lance Lewis had 17 for the Spiders (9-3), who have won six in a row.

* Concord lost to Myers Park 47-46 in the girls championship game.

* Hoops schedule

Many prep basketball games will take place this week as teams head into the heart of conference schedules.

Two CCC doubleheaders — Salisbury at Central Davidson and East Davidson at North Rowan — are set for Tuesday.

East Rowan will play a CPC doubleheader at North Davidson on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, South Rowan is at R.J. Reynolds for a CPC twin bill that’s been moved back a day from the original schedule.

Also on Wednesday, Lake Norman is at Carson and Mooresville is at West Rowan for NPC doubleheaders.

Also note Northwest Cabarrus will play Statesville at home on Wednesday rather than on the road. The site has been changed because of construction at Statesville.

Salisbury will play at East Rowan on Wednesday in a doubleheader that was postponed earlier this season.

A.L. Brown and Davie won’t return to action until Friday.

* Holiday hoops

The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool girls basketball team defeated North Hills 56-26 in the Holiday Hoops Tournament in Concord. Scoring leaders for the Stallions were Cara Kelley with 16 points and Hannah Holm with 13.

Leading scorers for North Hills were Ruthann Thomas and Johanna Tansey with nine points apiece.

The Cabarrus-Rowan Homeschool boys team defeated North Hills 62-39. Scoring leaders for the Stallions were Christian Hicks with 28 points and Conner McCall with 10. Ethan Marshall and Wade Butner scored 15 points apiece for North Hills.

* Pfeiffer men win

Pfeiffer’s 11th-ranked men’s basketball team stayed undefeated Saturday night with a 112-105 win over Glenville State (W. Va.) in the Glenville Orthopedic & Sports Therapy Classic.

Pfeiffer (8-0) led by as many as 20 points but had to survive a comeback by the Pioneers by making 10 straight late free throws.

DeMario Grier had 36 points to lead the Falcons. Tavares Cooper had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Robert McGriff (14 points) and Logan Call (11) also scored in double figures. Craig Thomas had 11 rebounds.

Cortland Thomas hit three 3-pointers.

“Thomas was tremendous,” Pfeiffer coach Dave Davis said. “He does so many things that help our team but his rebounds tonight were critical.

“DeMario is so productive offensively. Scoring the number of points he does on half as many shots is rarely done in basketball anywhere, but he does it consistently. Cooper was again unstoppable.”

Pfeiffer plays Fairmont State in the championship game on Sunday at 3 p.m.

* Fields in action

N.C. State’s Shayla Fields (Salisbury) scored 22 points in the Wolfpack’s two games in the State Farm Classic.

Fields scored 15 points in a loss to Nebraska and had seven points and four assists in an easy win over Alabama State.

* Turkey shoots

Turkey shoots will be held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Faith Jaycee Ballpark.

Cost is $3 a shot .

Prizes to choose from are five pounds of sausage, a slab of side meat or a canned ham.

Country Ham already sliced and wrapped will also be shot for $5 a shot. Shots will be taken from 75 feet with all guns allowed with factory barrels and chokes.
