Seeded fifth in a difficult boys bracket in the NorthEast Medical Center basketball tournament, A.L. Brown lost to No. 4 Myers Park 77-52 in a first-round game on Wednesday.

Brown (8-3) got 17 points from Josh Gray and eight from Billy Simiton, but the Mustangs countered with five players in double figures, led by Presbyterian-bound Aaron Gibbs’ 17.

“They really hurt us on the boards, got a lot of third and fourth chances,” Brown coach Shelwyn Klutz said. “We didn’t shoot well at all against their 1-3-1 zone, and they just took it to us pretty good.”

The Wonders will take on No. 8 seed Mount Pleasant in a consolation game today at 4 p.m. at Concord’s Rimer Gym.

The other consolation game will be No. 7 West Stanly vs. No. 6 Robinson.

* Northwest wins in tourney

Northwest Cabarrus’ second-seeded boys beat No. 7 West Stanly 68-50 in a NorthEast Medical Center basketball tournament first-round game.

“The big thing tonight was not to get out-hustled because West Stanly is a scrappy, gritty bunch,” Northwest coach Daniel Jenkins said. “We didn’t get out-hustled, got off to a good start and didn’t let them get back in it.”

Jon Hathcock led Northwest with 14 points. The standout point guard is squared away again after serving a two-game suspension and a tough night in his first game back against Mooresville.

“Jon was attacking tonight, and that’s exactly what we need him to do,” Jenkins said.

Brien Garcia added 11 points for the Trojans. Roy Allison had 10 points.

The Trojans (8-2) will play No. 3 Central Cabarrus tonight at 8:30 in a semifinal at Concord’s Rimer Gym. The other semifinal at Rimer pits No. 1 Concord against No. 4 Myers Park at 7 p.m.

Lexington State Bank

Ledford’s girls topped Lexington 57-26 in a first-round game as Sam Young scored 11 points.

* Chelsea Hill scored 17 points to lead West Davidson’s girls to a 47-34 win over South Davidson.

* Micah Mabe scored 14 points to lead Lexington’s boys to a 52-45 win over Ledford in a first-round matchup.

* West Davidson’s boys lost to South Davidson 47-43 in the first round.

Frank Spencer Classic

Mount Tabor and R.J. Reynolds took it on the chin in the national division. Mount Tabor’s boys were pounded 73-48 by Kathleen, Fla., and R.J. Reynolds’ boys fell to Gonzaga (D.C.) 67-42.

* West Forsyth’s boys won 65-63 over Parkland in a local division game.

Statesville Record and Landmark

South Iredell knocked off Forbush’s boys 82-75 in overtime.

Freedom Invitational

West Forsyth’s girls topped Hibriten 61-35 behind Morgan Smith’s 13 points.

* Indians to face Barton

Catawba’s men’s basketball team, idle since Dec. 17, will return to action on Friday.

Catawba will face Barton (5-2) in the first round of the Lenior-Rhyne Moretz Classic Friday at 4 p.m. in Hickory.

Lenoir-Rhyne (5-3) will meet Augusta State (7-2) in the other first-round game.

The Indians will battle Augusta State Saturday at 2 p.m. before Lenoir-Rhyne plays Barton in the second game.

Catawba (3-6) ended its pre-Christmas schedule with a 66-54 victory over Lander.

The two tournament games complete the Indians’ schedule for 2006. Their next game will be against Lenoir-Rhyne on Jan. 3 at Goodman Gym.

* GARS event

Fourteen GARS members played at Warrior Golf Club on Monday.

Frank Masingo’s net of 76.20 led the ‘A’ players. David Schenk paced the ‘B’ division with a net of 63.66. Leading the ‘C’ players was Norman Schenk with a net of 65.48.

* Prep soccer

Salisbury’s soccer alumni game will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Ludwig Stadium. Donations for the Salisbury soccer fund are appreciated.

* Catawba baseball camp
