This is in response to Sandy Overcash’s Dec. 13 letter, “What can we do?”

Like many others, I, too, wondered what I could do as a citizen to be heard. This sense of helplessness is shared by many, I’m sure. I agree, there is something wrong when someone is able to take the life of someone and walk away freely (perhaps even drive) the next day! Perhaps if our laws were tougher, this wouldn’t make it so easy to do and people would give drinking and driving, speeding, etc. a second or even a third thought!

I realize judges set bail based on many different factors, but evidently these factors need to be changed. So, how can we help? We can’t right this wrong, but perhaps we can prevent future incidents such as this. Come on, citizens, I challenge you to do your part to help prevent future tragedies.

Ross Edward Neese (the party charged with DWI and other counts in the death of 8-year-old Sarah Burgdoff) will be tried in the Rowan Courthouse the morning of Jan. 3 in Courtroom 3.
