Minter helps Apps beat Virginia

Appalachian State’s men’s basketball team surprised Virginia 80-69 in Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

Donte Minter (West Rowan) scored nine points for the Mountaineers against his former school.

Nathan Cranford (Central Cabarrus) hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 to lead ASU.

ASU shot 54 percent and led by as many as 18 points.

College women’s hoops

Allison Schafer (Davie County) scored 18 points for Mars Hill in Tuesday’s 88-87 loss to Ashland.

Davie County falls

Davie County’s boys basketball team lost to Mount Tabor 79-48 in Mocksville on Tuesday.

Davie (4-7, 0-3) got 10 points apiece from Eric Lowery and Drew Absher. Davie trailed by four points late in the third quarter when the Spartans made a run.

Greg McIntyre and Ryan DeLapp scored 15 points apiece for the Spartans.

Big win for Wonders

A.L. Brown’s boys basketball team is 3-0 in the SPC after Tuesday’s big 64-57 win at Porter Ridge.

Josh Gray scored 19 points to lead the Wonders (7-2). Jonathan Efird scored 18, and Jacob Newman added nine. The Wonders trailed by 10 points after the first quarter but led 31-27 at the half.

Charlotte Christian transfer D.J. Harrison led the Pirates (2-1 SPC) with 15 points.

Hornets 3rd in Cup race

Salisbury is third in 2A in the race for the Wachovia Cup, symbolic of overall athletic excellence. Cardinal Gibbons, which won state titles in volleyball, soccer and girls and boys cross country is first.

South jayvee boys

The South Rowan jayvee boys basketball won two recent games to improve to 8-1.

South defeated Davie 67-65. Jason Grant led South with 19 points, including two free throws with nine seconds left. John Davis added 14 points.

South defeated North Rowan 58-54 behind Dakota Walker’s 16 points. Jabon Stark had 13 points and hit the go-ahead shot.

Middle school wrestling

Corriher-Lipe’s wrestlers defeated Knox 60-39 on Monday.

Yellow Jacket wrestlers dedicated the match to Betty Blalock. Blalock, mother-in-law of Corriher-Lipe coach Mike Ashley, passed away on Friday.

* Erwin defeated Southeast 53-33 to raise its record to 7-0.

Erwin has won 12 straight matches over two seasons and 28 straight county matches.

Kory Shaffer (7-0), C.J. Cain (6-0), Alexx Sousa (7-0) and Cody Sisk (6-0) are undefeated.

Middle school hoops

B.J. Sherrill had 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead West Rowan Middle’s eighth-grade boys basketball team to a 47-35 win over China Grove. Domonique Noble had 12 points for the Bulldogs (7-1). John Knox added eight.

Nick Houston led the Red Devils with 14 points. Jarod Roper scored 11.

* China Grove won the girls game 27-24. Sam Goins led the Red Devils with eight points, including six in the fourth quarter. Madelyn Plummer scored six.

Isis Miller had eight points to pace the Bulldogs. Diamond Price scored six.

GARS tournament

Fifty-four members played in the latest GARS event at McCanless Golf Club on Monday.

Low ‘A’ player with a net of 57.88 was Gordon Correll.

Low ‘B’ player with a net of 66.35 was Bill Bradley.

Charles Leslie was low ‘C’ player with a net of 69.15.

Robert Harrell was low ‘D’ player with 70.92.
